Butler students pack and load snacks for overseas soldiers

Natalie McDonald, fifth grade, helps load care packages to be mailed to troops overseas, outside the Butler Middle School Tuesday.

Butler fifth- and sixth-grade students on Tuesday packaged and loaded about 250 boxes of snacks to be sent to soldiers stationed overseas.

This is the third year that the school has put together care packages to be sent to special forces with the 911th Airlift Wing, who are stationed at a base overseas.

Soldiers with the 911th brought a military truck to the school to transport the packages.

“My goal is to make them aware of community service and make them aware of how they can help others,” said Kara Hovancik, the teacher who organized the effort.

During an assembly earlier this month students got a chance to video-chat with some of the same soldiers who receive the packages.
