CWNC nipped in OT

Trojan boys soccer rallies, but falls just short of crown

HERSHEY — The balance of power seemed to have shifted in Saturday’s PIAA Class A boys soccer championship game.

Two Ryan Augustine goals brought Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic back from a two-goal deficit against defending state champion Camp Hill with under six minutes left in the second half.

“They (Trojans) played really well in the second half and had us on our heels,” admitted Camp Hill coach Justin Sheaffer. “We were fortunate to get through the end of regulation. It gave our guys a chance to refocus and I credit them for getting back on task.”

It didn’t take the Lions long to decide things in the extra period. Just four minutes and 51 seconds into overtime, Dylan Mayanja scored his second goal of the day to lift Camp Hill to a 3-2 victory at Hersheypark Stadium.

“We knew we had to play a great second half and we did that,” said CWNC coach Aaron Kelly, “but I think it took a lot out of us and we lost our gas in overtime.”

Mayanja’s game-winner came off a centering pass from Jake Coniglio, who was rushing the right side of the net. CWNC goalkeeper Keaton Jennings, who made 11 saves in the game, had stopped the Lions’ first two shots in overtime.

It took CWNC a while to adjust to Camp Hill and the Lions took advantage of that period.

On the second corner kick of the game, Will Earhart played the ball short to Amias Colestock, who sent a high-arcing ball toward the net that senior defender Joshua Goodyear headed past Jennings in the 8th minute of play.

It was the first goal allowed by the Trojans in eight postseason games.

The Lions (25-1) scored another goal just 54 seconds before halftime. After CWNC was called for a foul, Mayanja found the net on a penalty kick.

It wasn’t a question of strategy in the first half for CWNC, but execution.

“We had some chances in the first half that we should have finished,” said Augustine. One of them came in the 18th minute when forward Joe Kearney put full leg into a shot from just six yards out. Making the save was not Lion goalie Noah Smeriglio, but defender Matt Little.

“We entered the second half with the same mentality,” added Augustine.

The Trojans began their comeback with Augustine’s score in the 53rd minute following a free kick from Nick Milas just to the right of the net. The former later scored on a penalty kick to knot the score at 2-2.

“We had all the momentum at that point and knew we could win the game,” said senior defender Luc Madonna.

The contest was played in a steady, cold rain.

“This is playoff soccer,” said Sheaffer. “If you’re good enough to still be playing this time of the year, sometimes this is what you run into. I’m glad our guys embraced it.”

Smeriglio stopped five shots for the Lions.

“Cardinal Wuerl is a very good team,” said Sheaffer. “If we play them 10 times, we probably both win five times. Fortunately, we were able to win today.”

The Trojans’ 2017 season included a section title, a WPIAL title and a 23-2 record.

“The seniors have led us to this point, but we also have a lot of talent coming back,” said Kelly. “The future looks bright.”

It was just a few years ago that North Catholic fielded just a co-ed soccer team. Even after the boys and girls were split up, the boys endured some rough years.

“When I and the other seniors were freshmen, we were 2-14,” said Madonna. “We completely flipped the script and I’m proud of the guys.”
