Police arrest handcuffed escapee at his apartment

UPDATE: The suspect, David C. Bemben, was arrested around 1 p.m. Tuesday after he went back to his apartment.

ORIGINAL STORY: Law enforcement was searching a heavily wooded, rocky hillside off Bessemer Avenue near AK Steel for a handcuffed man who ran from constables and probation officers Tuesday morning.

David C. Bemben, 37, escaped in handcuffs from state constables and probation officers who went to arrest him on a traffic warrant and probation violations.

They went to an apartment in the 600 block of Bessemer Avenue in Lyndora about 10:30 a.m.

Bemben reportedly lives there with his girlfriend. Two constables and two probation officers knocked on door and got no response.

The landlord was called and arrived. He was unable to get in and gave permission to the officers to go through a window.

They found the girlfriend inside, but they had to search before finding Bemben hiding in the attic.

Both people were cuffed, but Bemben took off running. He reportedly fled into the nearby woods. Authorities said his father lives nearby and they speculated he may have been fleeing to get there. He may have also managed to get his hands in front of him.

Butler City, Butler Twp and Middlesex Twp police have also been called to help find Bemben.
