Scoop eyeing 100-win season

It was a good week for local teams.

And for the Ol’ Scoopster.

Three games. Three wins.

Perfection.

Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic, Karns City and Grove City all won their playoff games to move on to this week.

And I raised my record to 95-22.

My goal this year was 90 wins and that looked pretty bleak after the first two weeks.

But here I am. At the top of my game.

Sort of like those three local teams still alive.

Let’s see what kind of week we can put together.

On to the picks:

Washington 30, Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic 18 — Wash High always seems to find great running backs.

This time his name is Nick Welsh, who has rushed for more than 1,850 yards and 26 touchdowns.

But will he be great enough to topple the juggernaut North Catholic has turned into?

The Trojans have a dynamic passing game led by Zack Rocco.

All Rocco, a sophomore, has done in his first year as the starter this season is throw for 2,186 yards and 29 touchdowns.

And Joe Meinert isn’t too shabby at running back for North Catholic.

Meinart has 1,232 yards rushing and 17 TDs.

But the Prexies have the pedigree, so I have to pick them.

Sharon 35, Karns City 24 — This is a throwback to a turn-of-the-millenium rivalry between these two schools.

Karns City and Sharon met in the 1999, 2000 and 2001 state playoffs with the Gremlins losing all three — although the final two defeats were close.

The teams haven’t met since.

Until now.

The Gremlins are finally getting healthy and getting that powerful running game going behind 2017 Butler Eagle Scoring Trophy winner Dalton Beham.

Sharon, though, provides its own challenge.

The Tigers have a dynamic playmaker in Ziyon Strickland, who has 959 yards receiving.

If Karns City can limit Strickland’s damage, the Gremlins have a chance.

But not many teams have been able to limit Strickland.

So, I begrudgingly have to pick Sharon.

Grove City 33, Hollidaysburg 16 — Any time I can pick an eagle to win, I’m happy.

And I’m picking this group of Eagles, baby.

Why? Because Grove City is about as well-balanced a team as you will see.

The Eagles can run. The Eagles can throw — Brady Callahan has completed 78 percent of his passes. Let that sink in for a minute.

They can run and they can catch and they can play defense.

That sounds pretty good to me.

Hollidaysburg is a sneaky opponent, however. The Golden Tigers have played a challenging schedule and are tested.

But Grove City will test Hollidaysburg like no other.

Therefore, the Eagles move on.

Scoop is still hoping for 100 wins.
