Trojans know little about foe in PIAA final

CWNC boys soccer team faces defending champion Camp Hill

The boys soccer team at Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic knows little about Camp Hill and vice versa.

But they will soon become very familiar with each other.

The Trojans and Lions, the defending state champions, will meet each other for the first time in Saturday's PIAA Class A championship game at Hersheypark Stadium.

“We know they won the state title last year and they're obviously really good again this season, but other than that, there's not much out there on them,” said CWNC coach Aaron Kelly of the Lions. “They're like ghosts.”

Camp Hill coach Justin Scheafer offered a bit more insight into his team, but not much.

“Our top three goal-scorers — forward Amias Colestock and midfielders Jake Coniglio and Dylan Mayanja — are all pretty close in number of scores,” he said. “Our goalie, Noah Smeriglio, is a two-year starter and is solid in net.”

The Lions returned a total of five starters from last year's championship team.

“It's a different group that had to find its own chemistry,” said Scheafer. “It was nice to see them figure it out pretty quickly. Being a defending state champion, you certainly can't hide from anybody.”

The Lions (24-1) and Trojans (23-1) both lost to a team from a much larger school. Camp Hill's defeat came in a 3-0 setback to Lower Dauphin, a Class 3A school. CWNC fell to Pine-Richland, from Class 4A, 1-0.

Scheafer is concerned that his team hasn't been tested much in recent games.

The Lions, who cruised to the District 3 title, have outscored their six postseason opponents by a combined score of 34-2.

“I'm hoping we didn't get too ahead of ourselves. I'm hoping to not have a letdown,” Scheafer said. “The WPIAL is a good soccer district. To win it means you're doing something right.”

Unlike Camp Hill, the Trojans played back-to-back nail-biters in the state quarterfinals and semifinals, winning by 1-0 finals against Mercer and Brockway, respectively. Being battle-tested in recent games could benefit CWNC.

Sophomore forward Ryan Augustine scored the only goal in both wins.

“He's paid huge dividends for us,” said Kelly. “He fits in so well with our system and has found the touch, not just with scoring, but with setting up the other guys.”

CWNC's starting lineup should include goalkeeper Keaton Jennings; defenders Owen Daugherty, Anthony Rivetti, Danny Lynch and Luc Madonna; midfielders Bryce Kopchak, Mike Drambel, Braiden Wills and Nick Milas; forwards Joe Kearney and Augustine.

Kearney leads the team with 55 goals.

Start time is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
