Rock's Martin makes history

SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University senior defensive end Marcus Martin made history Wednesday when he was named PSAC West Defensive Player of the Year.

Martin became the first player in PSAC history to earn a major conference award in each of his four years in the league. He was Freshman of the Year in 2014 and Defensive Player of the Year in each of the past three seasons.

Martin finished his career with a college football record 56 sacks. He had 15.5 sacks this season to go with 82 tackles.

Marcus Jones of Gannon — with 2,176 yards and 29 touchdowns rushing — was named PSAC West Offensive Player of the Year. Indiana (Pa.) running back Justice Evans was Freshman of the Year and Paul Tortorella of IUP was Coach of the Year.

Other SRU players making first team All-PSAC West are senior guard Ian Park, wide receivers Marcus Johnson and Milly Raye. Johnson also made first team as a return specialist.

Earning second team honors from The Rock are junior offensive tackle and Seneca Valley graduate Steve Gaviglia, quarterback Tanner Garry, running back Isiah Neely and place-kicker-punter Jake Chapla.

Seneca Valley graduate and Mercyhurst sophomore linebacker Corbin Kessler made second team as well.
