4:25 a.m. Monday — A vehicle driven by Charles Closson, 60, of Butler struck a tree that had fallen on Route 422. Closson was not injured but his vehicle had to be towed.

Monday — Autumn I. Gould, 19, of Butler was charged in connection with a Nov. 6 shoplifting incident at the Butler Commons’ Walmart. Police said she only scanned some items that she had at the self-checkout registers. Gould is accused of walking past the register with $161.08 in unpaid merchandise. She is charged with a misdemeanor count of retail theft.

2:30 p.m. Thursday — Francesca M. Brim, 22, of West Sunbury was caught failing to scan numerous items, valued at $227.37, at the self-checkout aisle at the Butler Commons’ Walmart.

She is charged with a misdemeanor count of retail theft.

[naviga:h3]Slippery Rock University Police[/naviga:h3]

Nov. 6 — Police charged an Allegheny County man with drunken driving last month on Keister Road in Slippery Rock. Ian K. Kerner, 30, of Bethel Park was pulled over Oct. 14 for driving a car with no working taillights.

Kerner admitted he did not have a valid driver’s license, according to court documents, and he also acknowledged that he had been drinking alcohol.

He subsequently was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital for a blood test, which showed his blood-alcohol level was 0.173 percent. In Pennsylvania, a level of 0.08 percent is considered intoxicated under state law.

In addition to driving the under the influence, Kerner is charged with driving with a suspended license and a lighting violation.

Wednesday — Felony arrest warrants were issued for Jacob R. Frantz, 34, of Freeport and Brandi M. Mekosh, 40, of Butler on charges they defrauded the Housing Authority of Butler County in 2014 and 2015.

Detectives said Mekosh on Sept. 6, 2013, started receiving Section 8 housing benefits. But at the time of the recertification in September 2015, she failed to report income from Frantz, her husband, who was living with her at a home on the 400 block of West Diamond Street in Butler, according to court documents.

Frantz, investigators said, had been employed at the Sunnyview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center since Oct. 21, 2014.

“The lease agreement signed by Ms. Mekosh,” documents said, “states that all changes in the household must by reported to the Housing Authority, Butler County office within 10 days.”

Mekosh and Frantz are accused of unlawfully receiving benefits worth a total of $8,646. Documents noted that the authority on Jan. 8, 2016, sent a letter to Mekosh and Frantz seeking repayment.

Both defendants are charged with felony counts of theft by deception and conspiracy.

[naviga:h3]State Police, Butler[/naviga:h3]

8:56 p.m. Saturday — A man was hurt when the car he was driving struck a deer on Route 422 west near the Mitchell Hill Road exit in Summit Township.

A police report was not immediately available and the man’s name was not known. He was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital after complaining of chest pain.

The Lick Hill and East Butler volunteer fire departments and East Butler Ambulance assisted at the scene,

9:28 a.m. Saturday — A Cranberry Township man was arrested after he allegedly led police on a 10-mile pursuit on Interstate 79 in northern Butler County.

Libin Zhou, 30, was arraigned on a charge of fleeing or attempting to elude police and three traffic violations. He was released on $8,000 unsecured bail.

Police said they initially spotted Zhou’s car cross the center dash line and single yellow line on I-79 in Muddy Creek Township. He also was speeding, according to court documents.

When police tried to stop the defendant near the Prospect/Portersville exit, he slowed down but did not stop. Police continued to pursue the vehicle and additional police cars were called out, documents said. Zhou’s car eventually got off the highway at the Slippery Rock exit. He pulled over at the end of the off-ramp.

“While speaking to Zhou,” according to a police affidavit, “he related that he didn’t know that he was supposed to stop his vehicle.”

Nov. 7 — Police charged a 22-year-old Erie woman with felony shoplifting stemming from an incident earlier this month at the Boscov’s store at the Clearview Mall in Center Township.

The defendant, Aneisha D. Robison, is accused selecting several articles of clothing with two other females on Nov. 1. The trio allegedly hid the merchandise, valued at $535, in plastic bags and walked out of the store, according to court documents. They fled in a car.

Police said the theft was captured on store surveillance video.

Robison, who has at least two prior shoplifting convictions, is charged with a felony count of retail theft. Charging documents did not indicate if police have identified the two females who were seen with Robison.

Nov. 7 — Britney P. Brown, 26, of Butler was charged in connection with an August shoplifting incident at a store at the Clearview Mall in Center Township. Police allege that on Aug. 23 at Boscov’s she took merchandise including cosmetics and jewelry valued at $259.49. Brown is charged with a misdemeanor count of retail theft.

Nov. 6 — Police charged a Mercer County man with threatening a woman during a child custody exchange last month in the area of Browntown Road in Mercer Township.

The defendant, Jason M. Dick, 37, of Mercer got into an argument with Elizabeth Pizor on Oct. 18 and later followed her in his vehicle after she drove away, according to court documents.

He continued to follow the woman as she traveled into Grove City. He also is accused of repeatedly calling her call phone. When she answered one of the calls, documents said, he threatened to burn her house down. Dick is charged with terroristic threats and harassment.

Nov. 6 — A Beaver County man was charged with being more than three times the legal limit for alcohol last month when he crashed his sport utility vehicle in Slippery Rock Township.

Police said Tyler S. Bailey, 24, of Ellwood City lost control of his SUV about 2:20 a.m. Oct. 14 and struck a tree along Mlller Road near Arrowhead Drive. But when troopers got there, they did not find anyone in or around the vehicle

While canvassing the area, according to court documents, they came upon Bailey passed out and lying on his back in the middle of Miller Road about one-quarter mile from the wreck.

Bailey came to and appeared confused but admitted that he was driving the vehicle. He was taken to Grove City Medical Center for evaluation. Later, results of a blood test showed his blood-alcohol was 0.260 percent. A level of 0.08 percent is considered intoxicated under state law.

He is charged with driving under the influence, hit-and-run, failing to immediately notify police of an accident, disregarding traffic lanes, driving at an unsafe speed, a stop sign violation, careless driving and reckless driving.

Nov. 6 — Police charged a Lawrence County man with stealing a Poulan chainsaw last month from a home on the 1300 block of West Park Road in Worth Township.

Michael A. Masters, 44, of New Castle is accused of taking the chainsaw, valued at $125, on Oct. 30 without the owner’s permission. He is charged with theft.
