CWNC boys join semifinal

One goal is a lot less than Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic’s boys soccer team is used to scoring, but that is all the Trojans needed to advance to the state semifinals.

Sophomore forward Ryan Augustine took a centering pass from Joe Kearney and found the net with just two and a half minutes remaining in Saturday’s 1-0 PIAA Class A quarterfinal win against Mercer at Slippery Rock High School.

“We had a decent amount of scoring chances during the game,” said Trojan coach Aaron Kelly, “but their goalkeeper was really good and super-tall. We weren’t going to score any cheap goals.”

The Trojans have now shut out each of their six playoff opponents and have allowed just six goals all season. Goalkeeper Keaton Jennings made three saves in Saturday’s win.

CWNC (22-1) will meet District 9 champion Brockway, a 2-1 winner over Springdale, in a semifinal Tuesday at a site and time to be determined.

“I’m proud of the kids and happy for them,” Kelly said. “They’ve stuck together and we just want to keep it rolling.”

Girls Volleyball

Seneca Valley’s season ended with a 3-0 sweep at the hands of section rival North Allegheny in a PIAA Class 4A quarterfinal playoff at Ambridge High School.

Scores of the match were 25-22, 25-19 and 25-18.

SV had previously dropped regular-season matches to the Tigers (22-0) by scores of 3-0 and 3-1.

“We changed a few things up, even during the match, but I give credit to NA,” said Raider coach Karen Martini. “They were spot-on today and deserved to win.

“They knew who to key on — our top hitters Emily Devlin and Hannah White.

“Kiara Carrisquilla, Anna DeGraaf and Brooke Lawson helped keep us in the game.”

Girls Soccer

Shady Side Academy scored a pair of goals in the final eight minutes in defeating Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic, 3-1, in a Class A quarterfinal.

CWNC sophomore forward Olivia Bonvenuto tied the game at 1-1 with a goal in the first half.

Andrea Bean had 23 saves for CWNC (17-6).

“This was a year of firsts for us,” said coach Emily Karr. “We won our first-ever section title, won a first-round WPIAL playoff game for the first time and made our first trip to states.”
