'Extraordinary Owls' appearing at Aviary

The White-Faced Scops Owl is native to the southern half of Africa, where it occupies dry savannas with scattered thorn trees. It nests in natural tree cavities and on old stick nests of other birds.
Events include talks, prowls

PITTSBURGH — This fall, visitors to the National Aviary will have the opportunity to see more owls than ever before while experiencing events that highlight the traits that all owl species share and the characteristics unique to each species.

Through the spring of 2018, “Extraordinary Owls” will feature new species, including the Verreaux's Eagle Owl, White-faced Scops Owl and Barred Owl, among others.

The National Aviary's Snowy Owl returns with the arrival of cooler weather, while the small but spunky Burrowing Owl can be seen on exhibit as well as in daily free-flight bird shows.

Extra programming will include Owl Talks, Owl Prowls with ornithologist Bob Mulvihill, and Owl Brunch, plus private Owl Encounters.

The National Aviary is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., though it closes some days for private events.

Admission is $15 for adults, $14 for senior citizens and children ages 2 to 12, and free for children younger than 2.
