One more step

Knoch sweeps TJ to advance to WPIAL volleyball final

It's been a goal all season for the Knoch girls volleyball team.

Reach the WPIAL final.

It's been a destination that has eluded the Knights in the past.

No longer.

Sarah Armahizer had 12 kills and Knoch dominated Thomas Jefferson with a 25-14, 25-13, 25-20 sweep in the WPIAL 3A semifinals Thursday night.

“I felt like we played really well,” said Knoch coach Diane Geist. “There's always room for improvement. We didn't make a lot of errors and we hit well.”

Hannah Rowe and Kennedy Christy each added eight kills and Abby Pospisil had 17 service points for the Knights (19-0).

Knoch has only made the WPIAL final one other time, in 2003, losing to Hopewell in the Class AA championship.

This year, the No. 1 seeded Knights will get No. 2 Montour in the title match Saturday at Baldwin High School.

The time of the match is still to be determined.

Montour swept West Allegheny Thursday night.

Both Knoch and Montour are guaranteed a spot in the PIAA 3A playoffs, which begin next week.

“It means a lot. It feels good,” Geist said. “It's a goal we've been working toward all season.

“It's one more step,” Geist said. “We still have a lot of work to do.”

Armstrong 3, Seneca Valley 1 — The Raiders eked out a 25-23 win in the second set to draw even, but couldn't hold off Armstrong in the next two games in a 25-22, 23-25, 25-17, 25-22 loss in the WPIAL 4A semifinals.

Seneca Valley will play Hempfield in a consolation game Saturday at Baldwin with a spot in the PIAA 4A playoffs on the line.

A-C Valley 3, Coudersport 1 — Josey Terwilliger had 21 kills as the Falcons won 26-24, 26-28, 25-21, 25-18 to advance to the District 9 Class A finals.

Kylee Eaton added 15 kills, Olivia Boocks 12 kills and Cassie Schwalm nine kills for A-C Valley.

Syd Rankin had 28 assists and Emily Wetzel 21 assists for A-C Valley, which will take on Otto Eldred in the finals at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Marys.
