Balanced attack helps Freeport spikers advance

A balanced attack helped Freeport get off to a positive start in its WPIAL Class 2A quarterfinal Tuesday night.

The Yellowjackets (18-2)made quick work of Deer Lakes, defeating the Lancers 25-11, 25-7, 25-18 at Fox Chapel.

“We didn't get off to a particularly fast start, but it's the playoffs,” Freeport coach Tom Phillips said. “Sometimes it takes a while to get your feet wet.”

Lauren Lampus had 10 service points, four aces, eight kills and two blocks for Freeport. Allison DeJidas contributed 10 kills, eight service points and five aces.

Hannah Mason had five kills, six points and two aces while Sarah Hettich added five kills and four blocks.

“Our blocks were big tonight,” Phillips said. “Once we got going, we played pretty well overall.”

The Yellowjackets will face Serra Catholic in the semifinals Thursday at a site and time to be determined.

A-C Valley 3, North Clarion 0 — The Falcons rolled at home in this District 9 Class 1A playoff opener by scores of 25-11, 25-9, 25-22.

Olivia Boocks had 13 points, 11 digs and 11 kills for A-C Valley. Cassie Schwalm added 10 points, three aces and 13 digs.

Kylee Eaton contributed nine digs and 11 kills while Josey Terwilliger had seven digs and 17 kills.

Boys Soccer

Slippery Rock (14-7) had its season ended by a 2-1 double-overtime loss to Mercyhurst Prep (16-3-1) in the District 10 playoffs.

Jarrett Harry, a freshman, scored the game-winning goal with 3:35 left in the second overtime session.

Chase Wolinski's third goal of the season — off an assist by Ryan Davey — tied the game with 18 seconds left in the first half. The Rockets threatened to score a few times in the second half, but could not get the lead.

Duncan McCoy had seven saves as goalkeeper for Slippery Rock.
