KC's Pennington 2nd in cross country

Karns City senior Rebecca Pennington placed second in the District 9 Class AA Girls Cross Country Championship Meet, held Saturday in Ridgway.

Pennington finished the course in a time of 19 minutes, 52.1 seconds. Amanda Foster of St. Marys won the event in 19:16.9.

“They competed against each other in a couple of invitationals this season and we knew it was going to come down to those two today,” said KC coach Colin Gaiser.

Pennington is one of the district’s five individual runners who qualified for the state championship meet, scheduled for Saturday in Hershey.

“Rebecca is one of the hardest working kids we’ve had,” added Gaiser. “She’s dedicated herself to the sport. It wasn’t meant to be today, but we’re just proud of her for getting to the state meet. I know she has high hopes there. She wants to medal (top 25).”

In the Class AA boys race, Gavin Schmoll led Karns City with a 28th-place effort of 21:12.
