SV girls volleyball wins big over Bethel

Freeport, GC also secure key victories

Emily Devlin had 12 kills and Sarah White added 11 kills as the Seneca Valley volleyball team opened the WPIAL 4A playoffs with a 25-17, 25-22, 25-17 sweep of Bethel Park Thursday night at North Allegheny.

Anna DeGraaf added seven kills for the Raiders.

Seneca Valley coach Karen Martini raved about the play of setter Madison McDonough.

“When our hitters have that many kills, it's because of McDonough,” Martini said. “She was pitching the ball all over the court. She led our team tonight from a leadership standpoint.

Seneca Valley will play Oakland Catholic Tuesday at a site and time to be determined.

Oakland Catholic 3, Butler 0 — The Golden Tornado (7-8) ended their season with a 25-12, 25-19, 25-15 playoff loss. Maria Lucas had four kills, 11 digs and an ace, Sophia Sacrifonte four kills and Gabby Lucas 10 digs.

Maria Lucas made all-section and Big 56 this season while Tabitha Walker was honorable mention in both.

Butler qualified for the WPIAL playoffs for the first ime in nine years.

Freeport 3, Laurel 0 — Hannah Mason had 18 service points, seven kills and three aces as the Yellowjackets rolled to a 25-15, 25-8, 25-6 sweep.

Courtney Grubbs also had a big night with 28 assists, four kills, five points, two aces and three blocks.

Freeport (16-1) will play Deer Lakes Tuesday at a site and time to be determined.

Grove City 3, Mercyhurst Prep 0 — The Eagles moved on in the District 10 2A playoffs with a 25-13, 25-15, 25-15 sweep.

Grove City will play Greenville at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Meadville.

Girls Soccer

Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic reached the Class 1A semifinals with a 3-0 shutout of Our Lady of Sacred Heart. Tori Michalski scored all three Trojanette goals — giving her 20 on the season — and Ella Beidler assisted on all three tallies,.

Andrea Bean made seven saves in goal to get the shutout for the Trojanettes.

CWNC (15-4) has outscored its foes 37-4 during a nine-game win streak and faces Greensburg Central Catholic in the semifinals.
