Freeport eyes rival Valley

Freeport's football team is in the WPIAL playoffs.

But the Yellowjackets (6-2, 5-1) won't be playing like they have anything sewn up when they travel to Valley (3-5, 3-3) for a 7 p.m. kickoff Friday.

“There's still too much at stake in terms of seeding,:” Freeport coach John Gaillot said. “If we win, we could go up a couple of notches. If we lose, we could drop a couple.

“We'll have plenty of motivation come Friday.

Freeport clinched a playoff berth with last week's 28-7 win over Keystone Oaks. Now it's facing a Valley team that sports plenty of speed.

Deonte Ross leads the Vikings with nine touchdowns. Noah Hutcherson and Darius Johnson have three TDs each and Valley has won its last two games, topping Burrell (18-13) and Apollo-Ridge (20-6).

Freeport is 5-10 all-time against Valley, including a 37-12 loss last year.

“Playing Aliquippa earlier this year helped prepare us for this game,” Gaillot said. “Even though we lost that game 50-0, we figured out how to take the proper angles against fast runners.

“Valley is right across the river from us. It's a rivalry. These teams will be ready for each other.”

Freeport quarterback Austin Romanchak has combined for 1,082 yards and 17 touchdowns running and throwing. Conor Selinger has rushed for 548 yards and six TDs while Jake Sarver has 13 catches for 156 yards.

Seneca Valley (2-6)

at Altoona (2-7)

7 p.m., Friday

Seneca Valley beat host Shaler last Friday, 45-7.

RB Noah Mancuso rushed for 70 yards and two TDs in the victory.

Raiders' sophomore QB Gabe Lawson enters the final game of the season with 69 completions on 117 attempts for 820 yards, 10 TDs and 9 INTs.

Altoona suffered a 42-3 loss at home to Bethel Park last week.

The Mountain Lions' two wins this season have both come at home by one point. They defeated Allderdice, 35-34, in Week 0 and topped Hempfield, 48-47, in Week 6.

Altoona QB Braeden Burchfield has thrown 15 TD passes this year while leading the team in rushing with 305 yards.

Seneca Valley defeated Altoona last year, 54-20.

C.W. North Cath. (7-2, 6-0)

at Freedom (5-4, 3-3)

7:30 p.m., Friday

The Trojans defeated South Side last week, 47-21. With a win Friday, CWNC can cap an undefeated run in the Midwestern Conference.

RB Joe Meinert leads CWNC with 803 rushing yards and 10 TDs. He tallied 155 yards on the ground last week and scored three times.

Freedom began the season 4-1, but has dropped three of its last four games. Last week, the Bulldogs suffered a 35-6 setback to Neshannock, but Freedom has clinched fifth place in the conference and a WPIAL Class AA playoff berth.

The Trojans beat the Bulldogs last year, 41-14.

Redbank Valley (5-3) at Moniteau (2-6)

7 p.m. Friday

Moniteau gave Karns City all it could handle last week in a loss, but the effort has given the Warriors some momentum this week.

Moniteau will have to contend with Redbank Valley running back Clint Thurston, who leads the Bulldogs with 1,354 yards and 24 touchdowns this season.

The Warriors have a play-making running back themselves in Manny McLean, who has rushed for 592 yards on only 93 carries.

Moniteau quarterback Chance Nagy is just 21 yards shy of 1,000 passing.

Summit Academy (3-5)

at Avella (1-8)

7 p.m., Friday

Summit Academy kept its hopes alive of qualifying for the WPIAL Class A playoffs with last week's 52-33 win at Northgate.

Summit is finished with Big Seven Conference play, but the Knights will have interest in the results of other games this week. A win by Northgate and losses from Shenango and Sto-Rox would put the Knights in the postseason.

Avella earned its first win of the season last week, an 18-16 win at Monessen.

Summit beat Avella, 50-0, in 2016.

Union/A-C Valley (1-8)

at Ridgway (6-3)

7 p.m., Friday

The Falcon Knights fell for the fourth straight game last week, 47-0 to Clarion.

RB Jeff Ginn rushed for 35 yards in defeat and QB Lucas Bowser passed for 57 yards.

Ridgway, which is in a co-op with Johnsonburg, snapped a two-game skid last week with a 41-0 decision over Elk County Catholic.

Aaron Hinton rushed for 112 yards and a TD in the win and Neil MacDonald added 84 yards and two TDs on the ground.

Ridgway earned a 35-14 win over the Falcon Knights last year.
