Heinauer breaks county win mark

Mars football coach earns 180th career victory

Mars football coach Scott Heinauer made history Friday night.

The longtime Mars mentor became the winningest football coach in Butler County history, recording his 180th career win as the Planets (6-3, 5-2) won at Indiana, 33-7.

The victory snapped a previous tie with retired Butler coach Art Bernardi, who had 179 career wins.

Chuck Green rushed for 118 yards for Mars, including a 70-yard TD burst. Cade Hetzler caught touchdown passes of 57 and 50 yards from Tyler Kowalkowski.

Kowalkowski threw for 184 yards, also finding Thomas Sheehy for a 70-yard score. Garrett Reinke ran for 57 yards and a touchdown.

Mars' win clinched a WPIAL playoff berth for the Planets, who travel to Knoch next Friday to close the regular season.

Grove City 41, Meadville 13 — Logan Lutz rushed for 224 yards and two touchdowns and the Grove City High football team rolled to a 35-7 halftime lead on the way to a 41-13 win at Meadville Friday night.

The win gives the Eagles (9-0, 6-0) the Region 5 title and a first-round bye in the District 10 Class 5A playoffs.

It also avenges two losses to the Bulldogs (6-3, 4-2) last season, one in the regular-season finale and the other in the district title game.

Lutz rumbled 68 yards for a touchdown less than three minutes into the game to put Grove City on top.

Lutz also had a 73-yard touchdown run at the start of the second quarter.

Trey Adams scored the first of his two touchdowns — a 29-yard score late in the first quarter to send the Eagles on their way.

Adams finished with 95 yards on 15 carries as Grove City rolled up 378 yards on the ground.

Brady Callahan was efficient again in the passing game for the Eagles, going 14 for 17 for 183 yards and a 9-yard touchdown pass to Qadir Muhammad.

Lutz also had five receptions for 56 yards.

CW North Catholic 47, South Side Beaver 21 — Zack Rocco completed six of nine passes for 161 yards and two touchdowns for the Trooans (7-2, 6-0), who led by two touchdowns at halftime.

Joe Meinart had 17 carries for 156 yards and three TDs for CW North Catholic. The Trojans intercepted three passes as well.

Wilmington 24, Slippery Rock 14 — The Rockets defense held the potent Greyhound offense to just 212 yards, but Wilmington scored 24 unanswered points to topple Slippery Rock.

Seth Slater put the Rockets (3-6, 3-5) ahead 7-0 with a 6-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.

Vito Pilosi rushed for a 2-yard touchdown in the second quarter for a 14-0 Slippery Rock lead.

But the Greyhounds (9-0, 8-0) got going thanks to quarterback Robert Pontius, who scored a pair of 1-yard touchdowns.

Cameron Marett scored on a 25-yard run to give Wilmington's its first lead at 21-14.

Jacob Winters closed the scoring with a 27-yard field goal late.

Clarion 47, Union/A-C Valley 0 — The Knight Falcons hung close to the Bobcats, trailing 20-0 at the half, but a big third quarter for Clarion was too much for Union/A-C Valley to overcome.

Clarion scored 20 points in the third quarter to run away with the win.

Jeffrey Ginn led the Knight Falcons with 35 yards on nine carries and Lucas Bowser was 5-for-15 passing for 57 yards in the loss.

Volleyball

Sarah Armahizer totaled 14 kills and Hannah Rowe added 10 as Knoch closed the regular season with a 3-1 win against Shaler Thursday night.

Abby Pospisil added 16 service points for the Knights (16-0), who toppled the Titans by scores of 25-17, 23-25, 25-19 and 25-23.
