Golf event aids kids' hospital

Chris and Cara Burnside of Cranberry Township and their friends, Nikki and Nick Braun, delivered a check for $11,610 to Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh Foundation. The couples raised the money through a golf outing last month.

CRANBERRY TWP — A Cranberry couple helped raise more than $11,000 last month for families at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC.

Chris and Cara Burnside of Cranberry Township, along with their friends Nick and Nikki Braun of Penn Township in Westmoreland County, organized a golf outing last month called Chip In For Children's at The Madison Club in Yukon, Westmoreland County.

Through their new foundation, Chip In For Children's Foundation, they raised $11,610 for the Hillman Center for Pediatric Transplantation at Children's Hospital. Specifically the money will help the small bowel/liver transplant family assistance fund, which supports transplant patients and their families with necessities outside medical care like travel, housing and meals.

The couples formally presented the check on Monday to Children's Hospital.

“There are no words to express our gratitude to everyone who has supported our idea to start the Chip In For Children's Foundation and continuously cheered us on along the way,” said Nikki Braun, co-founder of the foundation.

Chris Burnside and Nick Braun had an idea in the spring to start an annual charity golf outing to give back, but they weren't sure where to direct their efforts, Nikki Braun said. The idea came up to help children, so they got in contact with Children's Hospital for some guidance.

The first golf outing was held Sept. 16. They hope to make it an annual event, Nikki Braun said.

Chris Burnside said they are humbled by the outpouring of support they received, and they're excited to build on the success of the first event.

“To reflect on how this inaugural event evolved over the course of a few months, from idea conception to planning and execution, is beyond energizing,” he said.
