KC's Pennington wins KSAC cross country title

Karns City cross country star Rebecca Pennington claimed her second straight Keystone Shortway Athletic Conference girls title by setting a new course record at Keystone High School Thursday afternoon.

Pennington topped the field with a time of 20 minutes, 50.6 seconds. The effort was more than 90 seconds faster than the runner-up, Cranberry's Tiffany Berry.

This was the second consecutive season that Pennington went through the KSAC season undefeated.

Girls Volleyball

Tabitha Walker had 11 kills and 17 digs as Butler closed the regular season with a 25-20, 25-14, 25-15 win over Franklin Regional.

Maria Lucas added eight kills and 13 digs and Hope Fiorina pitched in 24 digs.

It was also the last home match for Butler's two seniors, Alyssa Eyth and Katie Haley.

Butler will next play in the WPIAL 4A playoffs, which begin next week.

Freeport 3, Deer Lakes 0 — Ally DeJidas and Hannah Mason each had 10 kills as the Yellowjackets wrapped up their 13th consecutive section title with a 25-7, 25-13, 25-14 win over Deer Lakes.

Courtney Grubbs added five aces and 29 assists and Lauren Lampus had 24 points, five aces and five kills for Freeport (16-2, 12-0).

Slippery Rock 3, Franklin 0 — Morgan Malinski had seven kills and 15 assists as the Rockets rolled to a 25-15, 25-18, 25-17 win.

Klara Wilson added 10 digs for Slippery Rock (8-9).

Karns City 3, Union 0 — Makayla Waltman had nine kills and Emily Hegedus eight kills as the Gremlins swept the Damsels 26-24, 25-15, 25-22.

Frankee Remmick had 13 kills and Hannah Atzeni 22 assists for Union.

Alyssa Stitt added 29 assists for Karns City.

Girls Tennis

Butler's doubles tennis tandem of Teddi Isherwood and Reagan Sommariva defeated Hannah Yan and Nikki Bonacci of Franklin Regional in the first round of the WPIAL Class AAA championships, 10-5, but lost in the quarterfinals.

Isherwood and Sommariva fell to Pine-Richland's Melissa Vicardo and Alyssa Sarver, 10-1.

Girls Soccer

Kayla Daugherty tallied five goals and Claudia Allen contributed four as Slippery Rock crushed Franklin, 16-0.

Emily Raine, Ashley Shea and Ellie Reiser each scored twice and Irene Heinsburg scored once for the Rockets (10-8, 7-3).

Slippery Rock has now scored 100 goals this season.
