The writer of the June 14th Letter to the Editor entitled, “Weakening Elections” complains that introducing more regulations to the voting process is weakening voter character. I wonder how she feels about the 19th amendment?

The National Women’s Suffrage Association spent years lobbying, marching, picketing, and even suffering imprisonment in their efforts to change voter registration. That change, called the 19th Amendment, gave women the right to vote. After the passage of the 19th Amendment, the NWSA changed its name to the League of Women Voters.

The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan political organization whose goal is to educate voters on important issues. The organization has taken the lead on educating the public about the dangers of gerrymandering. Putting an end to gerrymandering will not change voter registration, as the writer believes, but will allow every citizen’s vote to count. The reason the league feels this issue is important is because gerrymandering is partisan and a threat to American democracy.
