Tornado facing ultimate challenge

Undefeated P-R hosts Butler Friday

This is one in a series of articles previewing Friday night's high school football gamesPINE TWP — Trying to stop Pine-Richland's offense is tough enough.Trying to score against the Rams' defense is every bit as daunting.Butler (2-5, 1-4) will tangle with both when they travel to Santacroce Stadium for a 7:30 p.m. Friday kickoff against the Rams (8-0, 4-0).“They have so many great athletes on both sides of the ball,” Butler coach Rob Densmore said. “They are a match-up nightmare for most teams, they have so many athletes.“They are a well-coached group. They know what to do and they do it well.”The Rams have allowed seven points or fewer in five of their first eight games. They are averaging 47 points per game and have scored more than 40 in every contest.“We've got a lot of experienced players,” Pine-Richland coach Eric Kasperowicz said. “We've got seven starters back on defense, eight or nine on offense.“These guys know how to go one game at a time and focus on each week. This week, that challenge is Butler.”Pine-Richland's offense begins with senior quarterback Phil Jurkovec, who is headed to Notre Dame. He has completed 77 percent of his passes — 128 of 166 — for 2,121 yards, 18 touchdowns and only four interceptions. He's also rushed for 358 yards and 12 TDs.Running back Jordan Crawford has rushed for 562 yards and 15 TDs, caught 17 passes for 252 yards and three more scores. Ray Falcone, headed to Lehigh University, has caught 34 passes for 726 yards and nine touchdowns.Jason DeFrancisis has 35 catches for 469 yards, Ben Jochem 16 for 283, Dawson Goltz 12 for 151 and, Cameron Ballay nine for 203.By comparison, Butler's three leading receivers — Brad Kopp, Jacob Tilko and now-quarterback Luke Michalek — have three catches each.“A lot of teams try to come up with a new defense to stop Pine-Richland.” Densmore said. “But we're going to stay with our 44 and 43 packages. Our kids know it and they're comfortable with it.“In terms of throwing the ball, we've tried putting in plays to do that, but we've been reluctant to throw the ball. Unless a kid is wide open, we don't throw it.”Densmore admitted that Michalek — who has completed 12 of 18 passes for 88 yards since taking over at quarterback four games ago — feels more comfortable making plays with his feet.“It's a natural thing for him,” the coach said. “We run the football. Norwin stacked the box against us last week, I'm sure Pine-Richland will do it this week and Canon McMillan will do it next week.“We're always going to try to run the ball. At some point, we have to be able to throw it.”Luke Michalek has rushed for 666 yards and 10 touchdowns. John Michalek has 209 yards and two TDs on the ground.“It looks like the Michalek show over there,” Kasperowicz said. “Those guys are very talented players.”Pine-Richland has a defense waiting, however, that includes linebackers Tyler King (65 tackles), Anthony Cerminara (50 tackles) and Tommy Camino (seven sacks), along with free safety Luke Meckler (three interceptions, two fumble recoveries). The Rams have forced 18 turnovers on the season. The team's hard-work ethic is led by Jurkovec.“He's a team captain and a true leader,” Kasperowicz said. “Phil works hard in the weight room, the classroom, during film studies, he studies coverages ... He's the hardest worker on the team.”Connor Frost (26 tackles), Tilko (25) and Chis Mertz (18) are Butler's leading tacklers.“Our defensive ends (Frost and Darin Skidmore) did a great job keeping Norwin's quarterback in the pocket last week, helping us put pressure on him,” Densmore said of the Tornado's 7-6 loss last week. “Our defense played well overall.”Butler is 1-8 against Pine-Richland, securing a 19-7 win in 2012. The Rams have outscored the Tornado 192-72 in their past four meetings.
