Dognapping suspect caught on camera

Butler police collared a woman in a case of suspected dognapping that was caught on a city surveillance camera.

Calicia M. Ledoux, 29, of Butler on Friday allegedly carried away an 11-month-old Siberian husky from its owner's home on the 300 block of North Chestnut Street.

Police later tracked down Ledoux, who was arrested and arraigned Monday. She is charged with misdemeanor counts of theft of lost property and receiving stolen property.

The victim, John Krill, told police that he let his dogs out into his fenced yard about 2 p.m. Friday, according to court documents. But when he let them back in the house, he discovered his husky “Loki,” valued at $1,200, was missing.

Krill began driving around the neighborhood, attempting to find the dog, He also notified police and passed on to them a clue: someone had reportedly seen a woman carrying a husky southbound on Chestnut Street.

Police Sgt. Ben Spangler looked at video footage captured by a security camera, which confirmed the reported sighting.

As it turned out, Ledoux was caught in the act toting the four-legged property about 2:15 p.m. and entering her apartment on the 400 block of West North Street with it, police said.

Spangler later that afternoon went to the home and found both the defendant and Loki. She claimed she had taken the dog because it was abused.

Not so, according to police. Spangler in his affidavit noted the dog appeared “very well taken care of.”

During the investigation, police also learned Ledoux was wanted on an unspecified warrant out of the state of Washington. Authorities in Washington, however, advised city police that they did not plan to extradite her back to that state.

The defendant on Monday turned herself in to police and was arraigned on charges in the dog theft case. She is free on her own recognizance while awaiting a Nov. 6 preliminary hearing.
