Warriors struggle in loss to Clarion-Limestone

Moniteau's Chance Nagy looks to pass as Cody Wise looks to throw a block. The Warriors fell behind quickly and lost to Clarion-Limestone 68-8 Friday night.

CHERRY TWP — Moniteau football coach Jon McCune said Friday night that he made a point to compliment his senior captains.

“I told the guys I was proud of them,” McCune said.

Unfortunately, those seniors have not seen their hard work translate into many wins this year, as the Warriors (2-5) dropped their fourth straight game, losing 68-8 to visiting Clarion-Limestone.

With several key players hobbled with injuries, Moniteau was not up to the task of containing the Lions' high-flying offense.

C-L scored through the air and on the ground early and often. The first two touchdowns were run in by junior Ayden Wiles (9 and 14 yards), while senior Riley Hummell ran in a 1-yard score and senior Kyle Kerle caught two touchdowns from quarterback Brenden Makray to take a 36-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Makray, a senior, continued his successful season with 265 passing yards and three touchdowns, all in the first half. He broke a school record in the process, coach Dave Eggleton said, becoming the first quarterback to pass for more than 2,000 yards in a single season.

“When he's on, I don't think there is a better quarterback in the league, or maybe the conference,” Eggleton said.

Kerle led the way for the Lions with 110 yards receiving, while sophomore Austin Newcomb racked up 91 yards rushing on 6 carries, including a 50-yard touchdown early in the second quarter.

Moniteau's quarterback, senior Chance Nagy, had two interceptions and only two completions when he was pulled in the second quarter in favor of junior Hunter Fitzingo, who also was intercepted once before Nagy returned to the game.

The Warriors picked up their only points on a 49-yard drive late in the fourth quarter that included a 19-yard completion from Nagy to senior Wyatt Geibel and a 15-yard touchdown run by senior Manny McLean. Nagy scored the two-point conversion on a quarterback keeper.

The Warriors also forced two turnovers in the game. McLean intercepted Makray in the second quarter with the Lions threatening to score and junior James Parenti recovered a fumble in the fourth quarter.

Clarion-Limestone (4-4) snapped a four-game losing streak with the win. Eggleton said the gameplan was to control the line of scrimmage and get pressure on Nagy, which they did.

“We won every facet of the game,” he said.

McCune said he tried to focus on the game's few positives for his team and hopes that his squad can finish off the season strong.

“There's not much you can say,” he said. “We have guys playing hurt, we're toughing it out.”
