More work still being done at VA Healthcare

CENTER TWP — The Abie Abraham VA Healthcare Center opened last month, but the developer of the property is still working out some minor issues.

Township supervisors, on the recommendation of township engineer Ron Olsen, voted to deny Cambridge Healthcare Solutions its request to have 90 percent of a $670,000 storm sewer system performance bond released.

One of the stormwater retention ponds on the property is not draining properly, which has been causing some water to run off onto several neighboring properties, officials said.

David Hargrave of Cambridge said that the work to correct the problem will begin next week. The company has been working with the state Department of Environmental Protection to design and permit a solution that should correct the issue, he said.

Since the fix is expected to cost about $30,000, Hargrave said it should be reasonable for the township to release all but $67,000 of the bond.

However, township officials should be cautious, Olsen said, because getting the system functioning properly could come with unanticipated costs.

Supervisor Alan Smallwood said that holding the bond is the township’s only way of protecting its residents and making sure their properties are not being damaged.
