Butler girls join playoffs

Liz Simms scored a pair of goals Saturday at Martorelli Stadium as the Butler girls soccer team clinched a WPIAL Class 4A playoff spot with a 6-0 win over North Hills.

Brit Spithaler added a goal and two assists for the Golden Tornado (8-6, 4-4). Gabby Bowden had a goal and assist.

McKenna Robinson scored on a penalty kick and Roxy Stalnaker added a tally in the win.

Franklin Regional 1, Knoch 0 — Becca Stockert had seven saves for the Knights (10-5, 3-5) in this section loss to the Panthers (10-3, 6-2).

Boys Soccer

Freeport 4, Knoch 3 — Bryce Hanby had a pair of goals and an assist for the Yellowjackets (11-4, 7-3) in this non-section game.

Hunter Hardin and Cole Bennick both had a goal and assist while Kenny Trim added an assist for Freeport. Giovanni Pugliese had eight saves.

Girls Volleyball

Butler finished second in the Armstrong Tournament, losing to the host team 25-18 in the finals. The Golden Tornado (6-4, 3-4) defeated Shenango 25-12 in the semifinals.

Butler won nine of its 12 games on the day. Tabitha Walker had 37 kills, 36 digs and five aces in the tournament while Maria Lucas had 33 kills and 33 digs, Heidi Gross 18 kills and eight digs.

Butler plays at Pine-Richland on Tuesday.

Football

Conception Catano returned an interception 76 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter, Saturday, wrapping up Summit Academy's 22-15 win over Shenango in Herman.

The Knights (2-4) took a 16-15 lead in the third quarter when Ryan McGuire caught a 26-yard touchdown pass from Delano Brown and the 2-point conversion was good. Giante Thomas scored Summit's first touchdown on a 62-yard run in the first quarter.

Shenango slipped to 2-4, 2-3 with the loss.
