Mars' Welsh joins PIAA golf qualifier

Knoch girls fall in WPIAL AA tennis finals

Natalie Welsh's consistency is getting her to the PIAA Class AAA golf qualifier.

Welsh, a senior, shot a 40 on the front nine and a 41 on the back for an 81 to finish sixth at the WPIAL Girls Golf Championships at Diamond Run Golf Club in Sewickley Wednesday afternoon.

With her effort, Welsh advanced to the PIAA Class AAA qualifier, which will be held Oct. 16 at Tom's Run.

“She didn't play her best, but she still advanced and that's what was important,” said Mars girls golf coach Ralph Jockel. “She wants to make it to states. She's been trying for three years to make it there. If she gets a chance at states, I think she'll be all right.”

Caroline Wrigley of North Allegheny dominated the Class AAA field of 21 golfers with a 5-under-par 67, four strokes better than runner-up Lauren Freyvogel of Pine-Richland.

Seneca Valley's Kennedy Johnston just missed advancing.

Johnston shot an 85 to place ninth.

Only the top seven advanced.

Hannah Folk of Butler shot an 86 to finish 10th. Maggie Feczko, also of Butler, was 15th with a 93 and Mars' Victoria Witouski was 17th with a 95.

In Class AA, Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic's Maddie Smithco placed third with an 82.

She was only one stroke behind winner Tatum McKelvey of Sewickley Academy.

Tennis

The Knoch girls tennis team fell 4-1 to Sewickley Academy in the WPIAL Class AA championship at North Allegheny.

The Knights' Laura Greb lost at No. 1 singles for just the second time this season, dropping a 6-0, 6-2 to fellow freshman Evelyn Sofar. Sewickley Academy last won the WPIAL crown in 2014.

The Knights (16-2) were playing in the program's first-ever WPIAL team championship match.

Girls Soccer

Lindsie Galbreath scored four goals to lead Knoch to a 5-2 win over Gateway (4-7-2), 0-5-2) that clinched a playoff spot for the Knights.

Natalie Brands scored the other goal and she also added an assist for the Knights (10-4, 3-4).

Freeport 8, Valley 0 — Sidney Shemanski scored five goals to lead the Yellowjackets (12-2, 9-0) to the rout.

Kaylee Comperatore added two goals and Piper Claypool had a goal and three assists.

Mars 5, Indiana 0 — Caroline Wroblewski scored a pair of goals to lead the Planets, who notched another shutout.

Alison Scaletta and Maggie Williams each had a goal and an assist for Mars.

Karns City 9, Forest Area 0 — Haley Scherer and Hannah Knoll each scored three goals as the Gremlins rolled.

Brooke Stahlman, Grace Genaway and McKenna Lavella also scored for Karns City (9-3-1).

Boys Soccer

Ryan Davey scored early to give Slippery Rock (10-4, 5-2) a 1-0 lead, but Commodore Perry scored two goals just before the half and hung on for a 2-1 victory.

Volleyball

Emma Bair had four kills and five blocks and Logan Barnhart had 13 assists as Moniteau swept Mercer 25-18, 26-24, 25-13.

Freeport 3, East Allegheny 0 — Isabella Russo had nine kills and three aces to lead the Yellowjackets to a 25-4, 25-9, 25-13 victory.

Tori Radvan added seven kills and five aces and Maddie Clark had 13 assists and three aces for Freeport (12-2, 10-0).

Boys Golf

Ethan Clark shot an 82 as Knoch edged Slippery Rock 453-458.

Logan Wolak paced the Rockets with an 86.

Central Catholic 184, Seneca Valley 189 — Zach Gehm shot a 36, but the Raiders fell short in their final dual match of the season.

Seneca Valley (11-3, 8-2), which qualified for the WPIAL team playoffs that will be held Tuesday, will host Central Catholic, Fox Chapel and Sewickley Academy in an invitational Thursday.
