Raiders hosting Bethel Park Friday

This is one in a series of articles previewing Friday night's high school football gamesSeneca Valley gets a break from Northern Seven Conference play this week, but the team's task will by no means be an easy one.The Raiders (1-4) will play host to Bethel Park (4-1) Friday in a non-conference meeting at NexTier Stadium. The Black Hawks are currently tied for first place in the Southeastern Conference with Mt. Lebanon. Bethel Park's only loss this season is a 54-20 setback to Pine-Richland in Week 4.SV coach Ron Butschle is concerned with the Black Hawks' physical play up front.“I'm always impressed with their line's play,” he said. “They have some running backs who are really good, but it starts up front for them. They come off the ball really well and it is imperative that we do the same on defense. When we do that, we are good, too. We need to get leverage and allow our linebackers to make plays.”Bethel Park's front is led by 6-foot-4, 315-pound West Virginia University commit James Gmiter, who plays right tackle. The senior also stars on the defensive line as a nose guard.“He's a four-year starter for us, so he's got a lot of experience,” said Bethel Park coach Jeff Metheny. “He's strong, a good athlete and is a great kid.”Gmiter has spent much of this season helping to create running lanes for a trio of running backs — Tanner Volpatti (607 yards, 13 TDs), John Doleno (561-8) and Jehvonn Lewis (246-2).“Volpatti and Doleno are our main guys and they complement each other well,” said Metheny. “Tanner is strong, but he can also run around you. John is a violent running back and is tough to bring down.”In last week's 55-21 win against Hempfield, the duo ate up a combined 348 yards on just 19 carries. The effectiveness of Bethel's ground game has led to the team attempting just 51 passes in five games. Junior Luke Surunis and sophomore Anthony Chiccitt are splitting time at quarterback.Butschle is hoping for improved play in several areas following the Raiders' 44-28 loss at Penn Hills last Friday. SV turned the ball over five times in defeat and while quarterback Gabe Lawson rushed for 119 yards, halfback Noah Mancuso was held to just 12 yards on 14 carries.“Our inside running game has been our strength, but Penn Hills did some things that negated that,” said Butschle. “We started doing some things on the perimeter and we blocked pretty well for that, but we need to get Noah going again.”Lawson completed at least two passes to five different receivers while totaling 147 yards through the air and three touchdowns against Penn Hills.“We try to be efficient with throwing the football,” said Butschle. “We take what the defense gives us.”Other bright spots from last week were three blocked kicks by the Raiders, including a pair of blocked extra-point attempts by junior Brennan Hayes. The Raiders defeated Bethel Park last season, 25-21.
