McNulty golfs his way into PIAA regional

Raider junior cards 77 Tuesday

Seneca Valley junior golfer Mark McNulty advanced to the PIAA Class AAA Western Regional by carding a 77 Tuesday at the WPIAL Championship at Nemacolin Woodlands.

Moon's Chris Sabol won the title after shooting even-par 70, then defeating Latrobe's Brady Pevarnik on the first playoff hole.

In all, 14 golfers advanced to regionals, which will be held Oct. 16 at Tom's Run Golf Course in Blairsville.

Cross Country

Tim Holtz finished first overall in 19 minutes, 48 seconds as Slippery Rock's boys (2-3) defeated Sharon 15-50. The Rocket girls (2-3) edged the Tigers, 26-29.

Karns City's Rebecca Pennington remained undefeated by placing first in a home meet against Cranberry, but the Berries prevailed as a team, 20-43.

It was the first loss of the season for the Gremlins (5-1).

Pennington turned in a personal-best time on her home course of 20:15.

In the boys' meet, Cranberry claimed the top seven spots in a 15-50 defeat of the Gremlins (2-4).

Maggie Hollobaugh was fourth and Rebecca Hollobaugh fifth for the Yellowjackets' girls.

Girls Volleyball

Maria Lucas had 12 kills, 13 digs and three aces as Butler swept North Hills, 25-23, 25-22, 25-20.

Tabitha Walker had nine kills, 17 digs and 14 assists and Hope Fiorina added 22 digs for the Golden Tornado (4-4, 2-3).

Seneca Valley 3, Pine-Richland 0 — The Raiders came up with a big section victory, sweeping the Rams 25-16, 25-14, 25-18.

No individual statistics were available.

Knoch 3, Central Valley 0 — Sarah Armahizer had 11 kills and Hannah Rowe added nine kills as the Knights won a big section matchup, 25-13, 25-13, 25-20.

Kennedy Christy also had 12 points for the Knights (11-0, 8-0).

Freeport 3, Burrell 0 — Ally DeJidas led the Yellowjackets with 12 kills.

Claire Crytzer added 15 digs and three aces, Hannah Mason pitched in six kills and Lauren Lampus five kills for Freeport (11-2, 9-0).

Union 3, DuBois Central Catholic 2 — Frankee Remmick had 17 kills, 10 digs and three aces as the Damsels won a dramatic 25-22, 28-30, 20-25, 25-18, 15-11.

Amy Henry added six kills, seven digs and 45 assists and Bryn Davis pitched in 14 kills and nine digs.

Libero Marli Hawk had 17 digs for Union (5-4).

A-C Valley 3, Keystone 0 — Olivia Boocks had 13 kills, 17 digs and 14 points to pace the Falcons to a 25-16, 25-22, 25-14 sweep.

Josey Terwilliger had 12 kills and Kylee Eaton 11 kills for A-C Valley.

Karns City 3, Union 1 — The Gremlins won this Monday night match 28-26, 26-28, 25-14, 25-15 as Alyssa Stitt had 26 assists.

Emily Wolfe and Makayla Waltman had seven kills each, Emily Hegedus and Livia Andreassi six kills each.

The Gremlins, though, fell to Redbank Valley, 25-22, 25-18, 25-16 Tuesday night.

Moniteau 3, Clarion-Limestone 2 — Emma Bair had 11 kills and three blocks and Logan Barnhart added 21 assists to lead the Warriors to a win in five sets.

Girls Soccer

Slippery Rock toppled Grove City, 5-2, with Ashley Shea and Ellie Reiser both netting two goals.

Emily Sarver added one goal for the Rockets (8-5, 5-2), Kayla Daugherty three assists, Claudia Allen one helper and goalkeeper Julia Hart made 11 saves.

Abby Biddle and Camryn Skibinski both scored for the Eagles.

Boys Soccer

Jeremiah Smith, Caleb Robb and Mark Ciora each scored a pair of goals as Knoch crushed Armstrong, 8-0.

With the win, the Knights improved to 9-2-2 overall and 7-1-1 in section play.

Freeport 6, Karns City 0 — Bryce Hanby scored a pair of goals as the Yellowjackets cruised to this victory.

Hunter Hardin, Sean Dunn, Addison Stewart and Dan Lynch also scored for Freeport.

Butler 4, North Hills 1 — Justin Stewart tallied three goals for the Golden Tornado (9-3, 6-2) while Josh Burlingham added one score.

Tyler Rankin, Alec Livermore, Tate Mohney and Andrew Chwalik all contributed one assist in the road victory.

Girls Tennis

Emily Gordon finished the regular season without losing a game and the doubles tandem of Jenny Baglia and Emma Lowers also finished the year undefeated as Grove City beat Hickory 4-1 to improve to 14-0 heading into the playoffs.

The region champion Eagles will open the District 10 playoffs Oct. 19.
