Gremlins prepping for explosive C-L

This is one in a series of articles previewing Friday night's high school football gamesKARNS CITY — Win 200 games, turn the page.Such is the philosophy of coach Ed Conto and his Karns City football team as the Gremlins prepare to host Clarion-Limestone at 7 p.m. Friday at Diehl Stadium.KC's 58-14 win at Keystone last week marked the 200th victory of Conto's career. The bulk of those wins have been with the Gremlins.“I'm so old I have a hard time keeping track of one game to the next,” Conto said. “I'm not big on records like that.“All I want to do is help prepare our kids for the next game. And this one won't be easy.”The visiting Lions (3-3) have dropped three straight games while KC (4-2) is riding a four-game winning streak. But C-L has scored 40 or more points in four of its six games, including a 60-52 loss to Brookville last week.“They have an experienced quarterback who knows how to find the open guy,” Conto said. “This is a big game for them in terms of the Class A playoffs.“They're certainly a playoff team, but this game could decide whether they stay at home or have to travel someplace.”Karns City leads its all-time series with C-L 20-14 and has not lost to the Lions since 2005. The Gremlins scored a 45-6 win last year.“This game is a building block for us,” Conto said. “We need to keep getting better because we won't have an easy one the rest of the way.”Clarion-Limestone only has 21 players on its roster, but is getting plenty of production from its skilled players. Brendan Makray has thrown for 983 yards and 13 touchdowns, including 309 yards and six TDs last week. Chris Peace leads the ground game with 426 yards and five scores.Riley Hummell is an all-purpose player who has rushed for 354 yards and four TDs, caught 18 passes for 295 and three scores. He had a combined 323 yards rushing and receiving last week.“We've got a good offensive line, an experienced quarterback and good skilled guys,” C-L coach Dave Eggleton said. “We've been able to make things happen and put points on the board.“With our limited numbers, all of our kids have to know a lot of positions. It's tough for us to simulate the opposing team's offense in practice, too.”That could be a problem facing Karns City as the Gremlins have found their offense of late. Dalton Beham has rushed for more than 4-00 yards and scored nine touchdowns in the past two games. He has 796 yards and 18 TDs on the year.Clay Garing has 355 yards rushing and Sebastian Troutman 284. But most significant is the emergence of the passing game as sophomore Anthony Kamenski threw for 150 yards last week.“With Karns City, you can never worry about just one guy,” Eggleton said. “They always use a lot of people, so you can't sell out defensively on any one thing.“This is a pivotal game for us. It could point us in the right direction toward the playoffs.”Conto said he's pleased with Kamenski's progress in the passing game.“It's only going to get better,” he said. “Noah Kepple is a talented receiver and he's missed the past two games with an injury. Now he's coming back.“we were counting on Erik Pfeifer to be a top receiver this year and he broke a foot in preseason. He may be back toward the end of the year. We moved guard Brandon Hesidence to receiver and he's making some plays for us there. It's coming together.”While C-L is low on numbers and may be susceptible to being worn down, Karns City won't attack the Lions physically for that reason. The Gremlins want to be physical against every team on their schedule.“We want to be the more physical team because in football, that can demoralize the opposition,” Conto said. “Our big thing right now is finishing. We get a team down two or three scores and we can't put them away.“Get a team down so far and they tend to give it up. We need to get teams to that point.”
