Knoch tennis joins WPIAL championship

Knoch swept the singles matches Monday and became the school's first girls tennis team to reach the WPIAL Finals by posting a 4-1 semifinal win over Neshannock.

Laura Greb, Brooke Bauer and Emma West won the singles matches for the Knights (16-1).

“After the success we had as a team last year (winning the section), the girls coming back were convinced they could win,” Knoch coach Nancy Conlon said. “The confidence level was there all season.

“They just had a drive to win, especially today. They wanted to make school history. Every win from here is a bonus.”

Knoch will face Sewickley Academy Wednesday at North Allegheny. Monday's win also clinched a state tourney berth, another first for Knoch's program.

Singles

Laura Greb (K) def. Crista Nativio 6-2, 6-1; Brooke Bauer (K) def. Abby Demosonte 6-2, 6-0; Emma West (K) def. Kelli Huffman 7-6 (7-4), 6-4

Doubles

Libby Conlon-Emily Ciganik (K) lost 2-6, 2-6; Alex Jaksec-Christimne Ciganik (K) won 3-6, 6-3, 6-3

Golf

Butler placed second out of 25 golf teams Monday at the Tam O' Shanter Invitational.

Tarik Taoufik led the Golden Tornado with an 80 in the 18-hole event. Butler scored 328 as a team, three strokes behind champion Riverside. Nick Penrod carded an 81 and Brayden Setnar an 82 for the Tornado.

Grove City finished fifth with a 338. Troy Loughry carded a 76 to tie for second individually. Hunter Bresnan of Reynolds shot a 74. Daniel Lucas had an 82 for Grove City.

Slippery Rock finished 18th with a 370. Walker Allison paced the Rockets with an 87.

Butler (girls) 193, Kiski Area 205 — Hannah Folk carded a 42 as the Golden Tornado (12-2, 9-1) won their final regular season match and the section title. Folk and Maggie Feczko will pay in the WPIAL Class AAA Individual Finals Wednesday at Diamond Run Country Club. Butler will be playing in the WPIAL Class AAA team semifinals Monday at Lone Pine Country Club in Washington, Pa.

Freeport 223, Deer Lakes 282 — Morgan Penn was medalist with a 38 for the Yellowjackets in this match at Pheasant Ridge.

Freeport improved to 13-4 on the season.

Boys Soccer

Clay Garing scored off an Austin Rumbaugh assist and Nolan Riley scored on a direct kick from 30 yards out as Karns City shut out Wilmington, 2-0.

Jake Weckerly collected five saves for the Gremlins (9-4).

Slippery Rock 4, Sharon 3, OT — James Gallagher scored the winning goal for the Rockets (10-3, 5-1) with Sourosh Mamoozadeh getting the assist. Ryan Davey scored two goals and Garrett Daugherty one for Slippery Rock.

The Rockets travel to Commodore Perry Wednesday.

Girls Soccer

Kaylee Comperatore and Abby Bastaja scored goals as Freeport (11-2, 8-0) blanked East Allegheny, 2-0. Sidney Shemanski and Sarah Lipniskis had assists.

Jenna Manke made five saves in goal to get the shutout. Freeport hosts Valley on Wednesday.

Butler 6, Shaler 2 — Brittnie Spithaler scored a pair of goals as the Golden Tornado rolled.

Emma Weiss, Emily Fleeger, McKenna Robinson and Katie Faulk also scored for Butler (7-5, 3-3).

Karns City 10, Keystone 0 — Haley Scherer scored five goals for the Gremlins (8-3-1) while Hunter Dittman netted a pair. Hannah Knoll, Kendall Colwell and Grace Genaway scored single tallies.

Karns City hosts Freeport Wednesday.

Volleyball

Olivia Boocks had 15 kills and added 29 digs as A-C Valley downed Sharpsville 25-23, 25-15, 22-25, 25-20.

Kylee Eaton and Josey Terwilliger added 13 kills a piece and Syd Rankin had 30 assists.
