Little Big Hitter

Union senior outside hitter Frankee Remmick has 78 kills in seven matches this season. At 5-foot-7, Remmick is undersized compared to some of the premiere hitters in the Keystone Shortway Athletic Conference, but she still excels.
Despite relatively diminutive frame, Union's Remmick an all-around force for Damsels

RIMERSBURG — Frankee Remmick stands 5-foot-7 and other premiere hitters in the Keystone Shortway Athletic Conference tower over her.

That doesn't dissuade the senior outside hitter for the Union volleyball team.

She's packs a lot of punch in her relatively diminutive frame.

“I do take a lot of pride in that,” Remmick said. “I don't have a lot of height and I'm taking on players much taller than me.”

It hasn't mattered.

Remmick has racked up 78 kills already this season in seven matches for the 4-3 Damsels.

She does it with smarts and surprising power from her right arm.

“It's all about placement of the ball,” Remmick said. “I look across the net as the ball is being set. It just depends on where the people are where I hit. Being an outside, I get most of my kills on angle hits.”

First-year Union coach Diana Thorpe quickly recognized the skill Remmick had at the net.

Opponents have also taken notice, paying particularly close attention to Remmick — with mostly futile results.

“She always comes up with hard swings — she's the hardest attacker we have,” Thorpe said. “Everyone tries to double block her.

“She has the peripheral vision and the accuracy,” Thorpe added. “She knows when to tip it or push it or hit it. She's just one of those players who can get the ball over the net.”

Since Remmick began playing volleyball in the seventh grade she's had that special talent.

Also a basketball player, she said volleyball has always been her favorite sport.

Remmick said the thrill of getting a clean, powerful kill is what fires her up the most about volleyball.

“That feels really good,” Remmick said. “It always helps to have a good setter like Hannah (Atzeni).”

Remmick, though, isn't all about hitting.

She's also averaging nearly 10 digs per match and is rarely replaced on the floor.

“I tell you what, she's probably the most consistent and complete player we have,” Thorpe said. “She sees the court well and sees the open spots and she serves pretty darn well, too.”

Remmick is also proud of her eclectic skills on the court.

She's had double-digit kills and digs in several matches and even had a contest in which she recorded nine aces.

“I'm always on the floor,” she said. “It can get a little tiring, but I'm used to it and I love it.”

Being the tallest player on a team that lacks premiere size is also puts added onus on Remmick.

“Our height kind of hurts us against teams with taller girls because it's hard to get blocks,” Remmick said. “But we're pretty good on defense. We have a really good libero (Marli Hawk) and we all get a lot of digs.”

Like at the net, Remmick has an innate ability to be in the right place at the right time on defense.

“She can get to anything — even the weird ones she can dive and get one arm on it and get it over,” Thorpe said.

Remmick is unsure whether she will play in college or not.

“I want to, but I also want to focus on school,” she said.

For now, she's content on doing everything she can to get Union some victories.

And Thorpe is grateful to have her.

“She comes up big in the big moments,” Thorpe said. “She's a leader and is very confident. I can't say enough about her.”
