Raiders send 3 golfers to finals

Seneca Valley advanced three golfers to the WPIAL Championships during a semifinal tourney Tuesday on The Links at Spring Church.

Adam Bushee shot a 73 for the Raiders while Mark McNulty carded a 74 and Paul Lopiccolo a 75.

Butler advanced one golfer — Drew Kukla — who shot a 76.

The WPIAL Championships will be held Oct. 3 at Nemacolin Woodlands.

Boys Soccer

Drew Balla and Austin Myers each scored goals for Seneca Valley in a 2-2 draw with North Allegheny.

Myers’ goal came just three minutes into the match.

After North Allegheny (9-2-1, 5-0-1) had tied it at 1-1, Balla scored on a header for the Raiders (4-2-2, 3-2-1) with 33:12 remaining, but NA knotted the score with a goal with 7:35 remaining.

Freeport 2, Shady Side Academy 1 (OT) — Bryce Hanby scored the game-winner 30 seconds into overtime on an assist by Hunter Hardin to give the Yellowjackets a dramatic win.

Hardin also scored earlier in the match off an assist by Adam Kvarta.

Keeper Giovanni Pugliese recorded 16 saves for Freeport (8-2, 6-2).

Karns City 5, Redbank Valley 1 — Dakota King recorded a hat trick and Nate Rondinelli and Austin Rumbaugh also scored for the Gremlins (6-4).

Butler 4, Shaler 2 — Justin Stewart scored three goals for Butler.

Tate Mohney also scored for the Golden Tornado.

Volleyball

Ally DeJidas had 10 kills as Freeport won a battle of section unbeatens over Deer Lakes, 25-8, 25-8, 25-15.

Courtney Grubbs added 14 points, two aces and 24 assists and Lauren Lampus seven kills, 18 points and three aces for Freeport (9-1, 7-0).

Slippery Rock 3, Franklin 0 — Annika Peale had nine kills and Olivia Girdwood added eight kills to lead the Rockets to a 25-16, 25-13, 25-9 win.

Morgan Malinski added 19 assists and five aces for Slippery Rock (4-5).

Redbank Valley 3, Union 1 — Frankee Remmick had 11 kills, seven digs and three aces, but the Damsels fell 21-25, 22-25, 25-23, 18-25.

Hannah Atzeni had 23 assists, Marli Hawk 10 digs for Union.

Karns City 3, Forest Area 0 — Alyssa Stitt had 16 assists and five aces as the Gremlins rolled to a 25-9, 25-13, 25-15 win.

Emily Hegedus had six kills and six aces and Makayla Waltman, Livia Andreassi and Rayna Miller each had three kills.

Keystone 3, Moniteau 0 — The Warriors lost 25-15, 25-20, 25-18.

Cross Country

Gavin Schmoll placed second to lead the Karns City boys cross country team to a 28-29 victory over North Clarion.

Rebecca Pennington placed first for the Gremlins in the girls race.

Freeport downed by Indiana, Riverview — John Asay ran a time of 18:44 to place second, but the Freeport boys lost to both Indiana and Riverview.

The Yellowjacket girls also lost to both Indiana and Riverview.

Butler earns sweep — Noah Beveridge won the boys race with a time of 18:25 to lead four Golden Tornado runners in the top four spots in a 15-50 win over Hampton and a 16-47 triumph over Shaler.

The Butler girls had the top three finishers in a 21-35 win over Hampton and a 17-46 victory over Shaler.

Autumn Pettinato placed first for the Golden Tornado.
