Turnover bug bites Moniteau

CHERRY TWP — Despite turning the ball over seven times Friday night, Moniteau's football team still had a chance to pull out a victory against Keystone.

But Corey Rapp dashed the Warriors' hopes once and for all.

When Chance Nagy scored on a 1-yard run and then converted the 2-point conversion, Moniteau had cut the Keystone lead to 20-17 with more than seven minutes left in the game.

Rapp then returned the ensuing kickoff 100 yards to give the Panthers a 26-17 lead, the final margin of victory.

“We just didn't stay in our lanes,” Moniteau head coach Jon McCune said of Rapp's return. “We just had some breakdowns.”

It took the Panthers just 11 seconds to score the first points of the game as Rapp, who led the Panthers with 86 yards rushing, rumbled 13 yards to pay dirt one play after a Moniteau fumble on the opening kickoff. The 2-point conversion gave the Panthers an 8-0 edge.

Manny McLean, who rushed for 98 yards in the first quarter and 132 for the game, got the Warriors on the board with 4:20 left in the quarter, scoring on a 13-yard run to cut the Panthers' lead to 8-6.

The Panthers would turn another Moniteau special teams miscue into points later in the first quarter. After a Keystone punt, the Warriors fumbled again, setting Keystone up at the 28-yard line. Four plays later, Rapp scored his second touchdown of the game, this time from 22 yards out on fourth down to give the Panthers a 14-6 lead.

Moniteau kicker Steven Fawcett scored the only points of the second quarter when he booted a 29-yard field goal as time expired to cut the lead to 14-9 at halftime.

Rapp, who scored four touchdowns in the game, accounted for the only score in the third quarter, catching a 1-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Nate Wingard.

Despite having a lot of success running the ball in the first quarter, the Warriors went to the air over the final three quarters, as quarterback Chance Nagy attempted 28 passes, completing 12 for 141 yards, but throwing four interceptions.

“This one's on me,” McCune said. “That was our game plan coming in. We just didn't execute.”

Nick Martino and Jared Lominski led Moniteau (2-2) with six catches apiece.
