New-look offense not enough for Butler

BUTLER TWP — Butler unveiled a new-look offense Friday night.

But the Golden Tornado were up against the same old North Allegheny.

Turner White rushed for 148 yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback Luke Trueman connected on two deep passes and the Tigers defeated Butler, 29-7, in a Northern Seven football game Friday night at Art Bernardi Stadium.

“NA is NA,” Butler coach Rob Densmore. “That's a pretty good football team.”

Butler (1-3, 0-3) kept the Tigers close early, however.

Colton Frost nailed White for a four-yard loss and John Michalek sacked Trueman as North Allegheny (3-2, 2-1) turned its first possession over on downs at the Buttler 29-yard line.

NA did strike first as Trueman connected with John Varzdel deep over the middle for a 38-yard TD pass midway through the opening quarter. Butler took a penalty before the conversion and the Tigers tacked on a two-point run.

“We took advantage of some one-on-one situations and Luke threw some nice balls tonight,” NA coach Art Walker Jr. said.

Butler responded with an 8-play, 83-yard scoring drive, highlighted by a 66-yard Luke Michalek run. Dan Kline scored on a 3-yard run and with the PAT, the Tornado trailed 8-7 in the second quarter.

Michalek started at quarterback for Butler — shifting over from running back — and (previous QB) Brandon Fleeger started at running back. The Tornado stayed with that offense throughout the night.

“We want our best athlete to handle the football as much as possible and that was the way,” Densmore said. “I asked Brandon where he wanted to play and he still wanted his hands ion the football.

“We gave him reps at running back and that's how this whole thing started.”

The Tigers scored on a pair of long runs — a 24-yarder by Ben Meanza and a 23-yarder by White — to take a 22-7 lead into halftime.

Butler turned the first possession of the third quarter over on downs at the NA 34. The Tornado did not threaten to score again, though Michalek had 25 carries for 137 yards on the evening.

White's 2-yard scoring run with 7:13 to play put an end to the competitive aspect of the game.

“Do I feel like this game should have been closer than 29-7? I do,” Densmore said. “Our kids were aggressive and they played hard.

“They (NA) hurt us in the first half with some big plays. We made corrections at halftime, but we went over those plays 352 million times in practice all week. Sometimes you get in a game and kids lose it a little bit.”

North Allegheny was flagged eight times for 75 yards and had the game's lone turnover. Chris Mertz recovered a Tiger fumble at the Butler 21 in the third quarter.
