Butler edges Seneca Valley

Tornado earn 2-1 boys soccer win vs. Raiders

Tate Mohney scored with less than 10 minutes left in regulation as Butler's boys soccer team earned a 2-1 win over Seneca Valley at NexTier Stadium Thursday night.

Justin Stewart gave the Golden Tornado (5-2, 4-1) a 1-0 lead in the first half when he scored off a pass from Peyton Seybert.

Seneca Valley (4-2-1, 3-2) tied the score with 13 minutes left in the game on a goal by Louis Newell.

Andrew Chwalik was the winning goalkeeper.

Karns City 5, Keystone 1 — Clay Garing tallied a hat trick for the Gremlins (5-3). Dakota King and Nate Rondinelli both added one goal.

Assists were credited to King (2), Austin Rumbaugh, Eli Cowoski and Rondinelli.

Deer Lakes 3, Freeport 2 — Kenny Trim and Drew Nigra scored for the Yellowjackets (6-2, 4-2).

Girls Soccer

Kaylee Comperatore and Carlie Giori both netted a goal in Freeport's 2-1 win over Highlands.

Sidney Shemanski added an assist and Jenna Manke had three saves for the Yellowjackets (8-1, 5-0).

Karns City 2, DuBois Area 2 — Haley Scherer scored both goals for the Gremlins (5-1-1) in this stalemate in Clearfield County.

Slippery Rock 6, Sharpsville 0 — Kayla Daugherty scored four times and Ashley Shea added two goals for the Rockets (5-4, 3-2).

Ellie Reiser contributed three assists. Daugherty and Emily Raine both added one.

Girls Golf

Kennedy Johnston fired a 41 at Connoquenessing Country Club, leading Seneca Valley to a 187-223 win over Armstrong.

The Raiders improved to 8-4 with the win.

Johnston's effort came a day after she advanced to the WPIAL individual second round by carding a 72 at Conley's Resort.

Boys Golf

Seneca Valley and Mars both played well, but the Raiders were four strokes better at Rittswood Golf Course.

Adam Bushee shot a 36 to lead SV to a 192-196 victory over the host Planets.

Paul Lopiccolo and Zach Gehm both added a 38 for Seneca.

Chris Sicher (37), Shea Moffa (39) and Cody Killian (39) each were sub-40 for Mars.

Grove City's David Dennis shot a 44 to help the Eagles limit themselves to 186 strokes and finish second out of three teams at Grove City Country Club.

Slippery Rock finished at 202, with Logan Wolak carding a 47.

Sharon won the event with a 179.

Girls Volleyball

Butler was swept at North Allegheny by scores of 25-12, 25-12 and 25-7.

Tabitha Walker had 16 digs and four kills for the Golden Tornado (3-3, 1-3) while Maria Lucas added 12 digs and four kills and Alyssa Eyth four kills.

The Tigers are ranked No. 1 in the WPIAL and No. 3 in the state.

Freeport 3, Fox Chapel 0 — The Yellowjackets improved to 7-1 with this 25-19, 25-14, 26-24 victory.

Knoch 3, Hampton 0 — Sarah Armahizer's eight kills and 11 service points keyed this 25-16, 26-24, 25-15 win for the Knights (7-0, 6-0).

Karns City 3, Clarion-Limestone 1 — Emily Hegedus and Rayna Miller each had 10 kills as the Gremlins won 23-25, 25-16, 25-16, 26-24.

Alyssa Stitt added 28 assists for Karns City.

A-C Valley 3, Cranberry 0 — Olivia Boocks had 14 kills and Josey Terwilliger added 11 kills in the Falcons' 25-20, 25-14, 25-15 sweep.

Emily Wetzel had 10 assists for A-C Valley.
