Freeport, Mars girls soccer score shutouts

Piper Claypool scored twice and added an assist from her outside back position to lead Freeport to a 3-0 girls soccer section victory against Springdale.

Sidney Shemanski added a goal and Jenna Manke made three saves for the Yellowjackets (7-1, 4-0).

Mars 8, Gateway 0 — Taylor Hamlett scored three goals for the Planets, who remain unscored upon in section play. Carol Wroblewski added a pair of goals.

Maggie Williams, Gracie Dunaway and Ellie Howell also scored for Mars.

Butler 3, North Hills 1 — Brittnie Spithaler scored two goals and Liz Simms one as the Golden Tornado improved to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in section play.

Franklin Regional 1, Knoch 0 — Becca Stockert had a strong game in defeat, making seven saves for the Knights (5-2, 1-2).

Boys Golf

Freeport’s Morgan Penn carded an 85 at the Section 1-AA qualifier Monday at Greensburg Country Club. He fell two strokes short of qualifying for the WPIAL tourney.

Tiger Hubbard (79) of Burrell and Derek Petrishen (83) of St. Joseph were the only golfers to move on.

Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic’s Tre Bartony managed the best score, 75, at the Section 3-AA qualifier at Pheasant Ridge Golf Club.

He advances to the WPIAL Championship.

Walker Allison carded an 89 to pace Slippery Rock to a fourth-place finish at the final District 10, Region 5 match of the season.

Franklin won the match with 321 strokes and the region title.

The Rockets finished fourth in the final standings.

Girls Golf

Natalie Welsh and Victoria Witouski both shot a career-best in Mars’ 169-205 victory over Peters Township at Rittswood Golf Course.

Welsh carded a two-under par 34 while Witouski came in with a 37.

Mars (169): Natalie Welsh 34, Victoria Witouski 37, Rachel Scherer 48, Gianna Buzzelli 50

Boys Soccer

Dakota King and Nate Rondinelli both scored three goals as Karns City crushed Redbank Valley, 12-0.

Austin Rumbaugh added a pair of scores while Jake Friel, Nolan Riley, Clay Garing and Jake Weckerly rounded out the scoring.

Cross Country

Butler’s boys finished eighth out of 44 teams and the girls 16th out of 39 Saturday at the Spartan Invitational in Boardman, Ohio.

Brett Brady finished 15th overall on the boys side in 16 minutes, 43 seconds while Aiden Dressler was 48th in 17:19. Maggie Welty placed 15th overall in 19:45 for Butler’s girls while Autumn Pettinato was 40th in 20:35.

Girls Tennis

Knoch (11-1, 7-0) remained unbeaten in section play with a 5-0 victory over North Hills. Knoch did not lose a game in singles play.

The Knights host Indiana Wednesday.

Butler 5, Hampton 0 — The Golden Tornado (8-2, 5-2) dominated this section match. Butler plays at Seneca Valley on Wednesday.

Girls Volleyball

Morgan Malinski posted 11 assists and seven kills, but Slippery Rock dropped a 3-1 decision to Sharpsville.

Amy Altman added 30 digs and Olivia Girdwood three blocks for the Rockets, who fell by scores of 18-25, 25-21, 13-25, 22-25.

North Clarion 3, Moniteau 0 — The Warriors were swept by scores of 25-12, 25-18, 25-23.

Emma Bair totaled eight kills and five blocks. Cambrie Campbell added six blocks, Faith Kelly 29 assists and Logan Barnhart 12 assists.
