Butler needs to reverse trend

North Allegheny coming to town Friday having dominated football series vs. Tornado

This is one in a series of previews on Friday night's high school football gamesBUTLER TWP — Butler is coming off an inexplicable performance last Friday. The Golden Tornado (1-2, 0-2) are coming up against a traditional nemesis this Friday at Art Bernardi Stadium. To call North Allegheny a nemesis is putting it kindly.“We have to put last week (35-0 loss at Seneca Valley) behind us, correct our mistakes and move on,” Butler coach Rob Densmore said. “I'm not at a loss for words too often, but I was after that game.“A lot of it is confidence with us. You try to instill it, you want tour kids to have it. Sometimes, it's easier said than done. North Allegheny is North Allegheny. They do what they do and they do it well.”The Tigers (2-2, 1-1) have dominated the Tornado in recent years. Butler has not scored more than seven points against NA since 2006, a 31-17 loss. They have been outscored 416-31 by the Tigers in their last 10 meetings.North Allegheny leads the all-time series between the teams 30-12 and has won 13 straight. Butler's last win is a 21-14 decision in 2003.“Every year's a new year,” NA coach Art Walker said. “We have to go into their place and I'm sure they're not happy with losing to Seneca Valley. We have to be ready to take their best shot.”While the Tornado attack has revolved around senior running back Luke Michalek, the Tigers have put together a balanced attack. Senior first-year starter Luke Trueman is at quarterback. He has thrown for 429 yards and rushed for 264.Running back Turner White has 50 carries for 361 yards and four touchdowns. The receiving corps includes John Vardzel (seven catches for 98 yards), Corey Melzer (three for 37 and two TDs) and Joey Porter Jr. (six for 83).“We like to spread the football around. It puts more pressure on the defense we're facing,” Walker said.“Luke has waited his turn at quarterback. He's been behind some good people at that position. He's paid his dues and he's prepared himself.”Michalek leads Butler with 202 yards rushing and four touchdowns. He has 610 all-purpose yards for the Tornado. Logan Dubyak is second on the team with 85 — and he's missed the past two games with an injury.Dubyak will return this week.“We need to get more creative on offense and work more people into the mix,” Densmore admitted. “Our passing game just hasn't been there. We've had balls deflected, some dropped. We keep working at it and that part of our game has to improve.'Brandon Fleeger has thrown for 109 yards this season and has been intercepted four times. North Allegheny has just one pick through four games.Densmore said Dubyak will primarily play linebacker Friday night and won't see much action on offense.“We've missed him as a player and what he can do for us on the field,” the coach said of Dubyak. “His leadership qualities are important to us, too.”Linebackers Dante Caputo, Nikko Rankin and Ryan Langdon lead North Allegheny in tackles. Walker also lauded the play of 6-foot-6 defensive end Canyon Tuman — son of former Pittsburgh Steeler tight end Jerame Tuman — and end Brennan McCauley.Michalek leads Butler with 10 solo tackles. Dayvon Coleman and Jacob Tilko have nine each, Chris Mertz and Colton Frost eight each.North Allegheny is coming off a 55-7 win over Shaler. Its losses are 35-15 to Bethel Park and 14-7 to Central Catholic.“Two totally different losses,” Walker said. “We didn't play well against Bethel. They have an experienced line and just took it to us. We played well in a close loss to Central.“At this point, we just want to keep getting better at what we do. This week is another opportunity to improve.”
