SV won't let go

Seneca Valley didn't let Butler stay close Friday night at NexTier Stadium, beating the Golden Tornado 35-0 for the Butler Eagle Traveling Trophy. The Raiders have won the rivalry game 11 straight seasons.
Raiders beat Butler, win Butler Eagle Traveling Trophy for 11th straight year

JACKSON TWP — Getting his hands on the Butler Eagle Traveling Trophy felt good for Ron Butschle.

“I was the last guy to lose this trophy,” the Seneca Valley football coach said, referencing the Raiders' loss to Butler in 2006.

His team won it convincingly Friday night at NexTier Stadium as the Raiders rolled to a 35-0 Northern Eight victory over Butler. The win handed SV (1-2, 1-1) the Eagle trophy — presented annually to the winner of the rivalry game — for the 11th straight year.

The Raiders built a 21-0 lead by halftime and limited the Golden Tornado (1-2, 0-2) to 93 total yards and three first downs. Seneca Valley scored touchdowns following all three Butler turnovers.

“We hadn't been doing that,” Butschle said of taking advantage of opponent's miscues. “Tonight, we capitalized and that makes such a difference.”

Butler received the opening kickoff and, using a 28-yard screen pass to Luke Michalek, immediately marched into SV territory. On second-and-three from, the Raiders' 22, the Tornado were penalized for holding,.

On third down, a Brandon Fleeger pass was deflected at the line of scrimmage, then intercepted by Jake Stebbins.

Three plays later, Jake Bunofsky was left all alone behind the defense and scored on a 66-yard pass from Gabe Lawson.

The Tornado never crossed midfield again.

“A blown coverage and that was that,” Butler coach Rob Densmore said. “We didn't block a soul all night. We didn't tackle a soul all night. I don't have any answers. I can't explain it.

“We had our best week of practice since I've been here. We were tackling everybody behind the line of scrimmage all week ... then this. I'm at a loss for words.”

Noah Mancuso paced the Raiders with 16 carries for 142 yards. Lawson threw for 131 yards and rushed for 49 more and three touchdowns.

Late in the first half, Mancuso bolted up the middle for 49 yards down to the Butler 1. It was the first play after a Connor Hayes interception and set up Lawson's second 1-yard TD plunge. That gave SV its 21-0 lead at the break.

“We had three offensive linemen out with injuries last week,” Mancuso said. “Two of them (Evan Schillero and Tyler Proctor) came back tonight and made such a difference.”

“We have to give a shout out to that whole unit,” Butschle said of the offensive line.

Lawson's third 1-yard scoring run capped a 64-yard drive early in the final quarter. The Raiders capped the scoring with a brief 18-yard march after Brandon Millward recovered a Tornado fumble.

Matt Stanger scored the final TD on an 11-yard run.

“This game was all about preparation for us,” Butschle said,. “We had a very physical week of practice. The credit goes to the coaches and players for working hard to get ready for this game.”

Mancuso agreed.

“This is definitely something we can build on,” the running back said.

Seneca Valley was flagged 12 times for 115 yards. Butler received nine penalties for 85 yards.

Michalek led Butler's offense with 52 yards rushing.

“Penalties hurt us tonight, but that certainly can't be an excuse,” Densmore said. “They got hit by them, too.

“I wish I had an answer for this. I don't.”
