Warriors battle adversity

Moniteau hosting Union/ACV Friday

This is one in a series of previews of this Friday's high school football gamesCHERRY TWP — There's adversity and then there's what the Moniteau football team will try to overcome this week. The Warriors (1-1) squandered a 16-point lead with a minute left against Punxsutawney in Week 2 and then lost to the Chucks in overtime.“It was a tough pill to swallow,” said Moniteau coach Jon McCune. “On top of that, we had some injuries, but we're looking all right. We had some guys play well in the JV game Monday and I think that was a pick-me-up. We recognized our mistakes. We're fixing them and we're on to the next game.”That next game is Union/A-C Valley Friday at home. The Knight Falcons have lost three in a row to start the season, despite showing flashes.Unfortunately for Union/A-C Valley coach Dave Louder, those moments haven't spread out over a full game.“We have to play four full quarters,” Louder said.Despite suffering a slew of injuries against Punxsutawney, McCune is expecting nearly all of his players to suit up against Union/A-C Valley.Quarterback Chance Nagy was one of the injured, but he has returned to practice and is expected to play.Nagy is dangerous with both his arm and legs. The junior has thrown for 236 yards and a score and has also rushed for 78 yards and a touchdown. His favorite target so far this season has been Wyatt Geibel, who leads all Butler County area receivers in receptions (10) and receiving yards (188).“(Geibel) is a good, strong, fast receiver,” Louder said. “And Nagy can run and throw. He'll try anything to make a play and that makes him very dangerous.”Union/A-C Valley also has some dangerous weapons.Jeffrey Ginn has been a dual threat as a receiver and a rusher this season for the Knight Falcons with seven receptions and 211 rushing yards.Ginn had a big night in the loss against Keystone while taking some carries away from Greg Duncan, who was banged up in Week 1. Duncan still has 341 yards rushing on 62 carries.Quarterback Lucas Bowser leads the Butler County area in passing yards with 355. He's also thrown four touchdown passes to go with three interceptions.“I think once Lucas starts limiting the mistakes, he'll take off,” Louder said. “The mistakes have affected him, I think.”McCune is hoping Bowser doesn't take off Friday night.“They have a pretty good quarterback and running back,” McCune said. “We just need to finish. If we play our game and just finish, I think we'll be OK.”
