Saturday — Matthew G. Hibbard, 22, who has no known address, was arrested on charges he entered a home on State Street without the occupants’ permission.

One of the tenants, a woman, was upstairs taking a shower about 1 p.m. Aug. 10 when she heard someone outside the bathroom door. She recognized Hibbard’s voice, according to court documents, and called her boyfriend on her cell phone.

She stayed in the bathroom until her boyfriend returned home. But by then, the defendant was gone. Nothing was missing from the house but the occupants found a broken plexiglass window on the back door. Damage was estimated at $50.

Hibbard was arraigned on a felony charge of trespass and a summary charge of criminal mischief. He was released on $6,000 unsecured bail following arraignment.

Wednesday — Police charged a Westmoreland County man in an alleged shoplifting that turned into a robbery earlier this month at the Clearview Mall Giant Eagle store in Center Township.

The suspect, Steven J. Miller, 46, of Hyde Park, is accused of trying to make off with merchandise — including meat, milk and baked beans — from the store Aug. 3. A store employee, however, stopped Miller from leaving with the items in a shopping cart.

When the employee asked to see a receipt for the merchandise, according to court documents, the defendant pushed the cart toward the worker and ran off. Police said the employee had to stop the cart with his foot to prevent it from hitting him.

The suspect was seen getting into a van and driving away. The van’s license plate traced back to a Pittsburgh company, which reported that Miller was using it that day and was taking it home with him for the evening, documents said.

Miller on Aug. 10 appeared at the barracks and allegedly admitted wrongdoing.

He is charged with robbery, a felony, as well as retail theft and simple assault, both misdemeanors. Additionally, police cited him with a summary count of harassment.

Wednesday — Cody T. Pyle, 27, of Chicora was charged with the July theft of a catalytic converter from a neighbor’s car on the 200 block of Central Avenue in Chicora.

The alleged victim told police that a witness on July 7 reported seeing someone crawl underneath the owner’s car and later leave with something in his hand, according to court documents. Police said the suspect’s description matched that of Pyle’s.

The witness, a woman who police did not identify in charging documents, subsequently identified the defendant in person, police said.

A catalytic converter is a component that isolates particles in the vehicle exhaust and incinerates them before they leave the tailpipe. It can cost between $1,000 and $2,000 to replaced.

Pyle is charged with a first-degree misdemeanor count of theft.

Wednesday — Police charged William R. Sasse, 32, of Concord Township with being more than twice the legal limit for alcohol in June when he crashed his pickup truck in Concord Township.

The wreck happened about 7:45 p.m. June 26 on Route 38 at Old State Road. An ambulance crew was tending to Sasse when troopers got there. He was arrested after failing field sobriety tests.

He was taken to the barracks and given a breath test, which showed his blood alcohol level was 0.196 percent. A level of 0.08 percent is considered intoxicated under state law.

In addition to driving under the influence, Sasse is charged with failing to keep right and careless driving.

Wednesday — Jacob R. Henry, 23, of Center Township was charged with drunken driving stemming from a May traffic stop on Route 308 at Sunbury Estates in Center Township.

Police said they stopped Henry’s car about 3:15 a.m. May 21 after they saw it cross the fog line and double yellow lines several times. The defendant admitted he had been drinking and he subsequently failed field sobriety tests, police said.

A breath test later showed his blood alcohol level was 0.115 percent. Henry is charged with DUI, disregarding traffic lanes and careless driving.

Troopers said when they got there, the suspects — Francis C. Cupelli, 24, of Butler; Jesse P. McKinnis, 25, of Pittsburgh — got down from the lines without incident. Police said the men were charged with defiant trespass.
