Theft of sausage and rolls valued at $8.38 keeps man in jail

Andrew Woods

A Harrisville man continues to be held in the Butler County Prison after his attempt to have his bail reduced was denied in court, pending the receipt of a mental health evaluation.

Andrew Woods, 21, remains held on $10,000 cash bail, on charges of felony robbery and summary retail theft after Judge William Shaffer denied the bail reduction without prejudice, stating that the matter can be revisited once a mental health evaluation is received.

Woods was charged after an incident at the Friedman's store on West Brady Street in Butler on June 20.

Butler City police said Woods attempted to steal a package of sausage and rolls from the store and tussled with two employees and a customer who thwarted his getaway.

One employee suffered pain and bruising to his right hand and arm, the other ended up with an injured left middle finger, and the customer complained of pain in his left arm.

Because of his alleged actions, Woods' summary shoplifting charge became a felony robbery charge, police said.

Police in charging documents noted the sausage and rolls were valued at a combined $8.38.

A full report will appear in the Butler Eagle.
