SLIPPERY ROCK — The Slippery Rock University football team is receiving votes in the NCAA Division II poll released Monday by the American Football Coaches Association.

This marks the fourth straight year The Rock has been mentioned in the preseason poll. SRU has been ranked as high as No. 7 during that time.

SRU is one of 12 teams from Super Region One mentioned on the poll. Shepherd is ranked seventh, California (Pa.) eighth and Indiana (Pa.) ninth.

SRU opens the season Sept. 2 at Kentucky State.

GULPH MILLS — Butler Country Club pro Rob McClellan carded a 1-under-par 70 Monday during the first round of the 101st Pennsylvania Open Golf Championships at Gulph Mills Golf Club.

McClellan was eight strokes back of the lead, however, as J.D. Dornes shot a course-record 62.

Joe Boros of Saxonburg shot a 4-over-par 75.
