Golf event has plenty to offer

FRANKLIN TWP — The 23rd annual Butler Eagle County Amateur golf tournament offers plenty.

Plenty of golfers, plenty of quality and plenty of opportunity on a challenging course.

The event takes place Sunday at Lake Arthur Golf Club with 146 golfers registered — 74 in the 7:45 a.m. field and 72 in the 1:15 p.m. field.

Among the registered golfers are four former Eagle County Amateur champions — five-time champ Sean Knapp, defending champion Rob Voltz, Dave Hungerman (1998) and Scott Vice (2015).

Committee member Voltz said he can take a few more golfers — and anticipates getting more — but the overall field cannot exceed 164.

“We've got some single spots available for golfers in the morning or afternoon,” Voltz said. “But they'll have to call me.

“As long as there's still openings, I'll take entries right through Saturday.”

Voltz can be reached at 724-822-4189.

Other notable entries in the tourney include former standout Butler High School golfer Jon Pratkanis, Stefan Carlsson, Brad Vantine and Paul Ajak III. Pratkanis was only one stroke off the pace after one round of the recent West Penn Open at Butler Country Club.

Carlsson, Vantine and Ajak III join Knapp in “being among the top handicaps in the field,” Voltz said. Knapp recently qualified for the U.S. Senior Amateur.

Pratkanis only returned to golf in the past two years after getting away from the game for a number of years.

“I got sick of golf, so I went to work ... Now I'm sick of work, so I'm back to golf,” Pratkanis said, laughing.

“Honestly, I don't think I played all that well at the West Penn Open. I can't take too much from that round. There are a lot of golfers in this field who are capable of putting together a round good enough to win and I like to think I'm one of them.

“The guy who makes his putts will be the guy who wins,” he added.

Carlsson is a 2013 Knoch graduate and a four-year member of the golf team. He relishes the competition coming up Sunday.

“You've got golfers like Knapp and Voltz out there and you know their scores are going to be low,” Carlsson said. “It's going to take a score in the 60's to win.”

Jenna Rinker of Slippery Rock is part of a talented women's field that includes multi-time Butler Country Club champion Jane Wymer, Donna McClymonds and Paige Scott, among others. Rinker won the women's title in the Eagle County Amateur in 2014, the last time the event was hosted by Lake Arthur.

She fell only two strokes shy of being the overall champion that day. Rinker has not played Lake Arthur since.

“I'm a member at Oakview and that's where I play most of the time,” she said. “I do know the Lake Arthur course well.

“I haven't had time to play a whole lot of golf. I'm just hoping to have a good day. I know it will be fun.”

Voltz said another committee member played Lake Arthur recently and said it's playing “firm and fast.

“It will; be very challenging to play,” Voltz added.

Last year, Voltz became only the third multiple champion of the Eagle County Amateur in the past 23 years. Knapp and Mark Young are the others.

“It's a one-round deal and you have to score well,” Carlsson said. “That means making putts.”

Rinker agreed.

“The putter will have to get hot. No doubt about that,” she said.
