Tuesday — Police obtained an arrest warrant for a Pittsburgh man accused in a June shoplifting incident at the Butler Commons’ Walmart.

Friday — William S. Stuteville, 27, of Butler and Madalyn Somple, 28, of Butler Township were both charged with misdemeanor drug possession stemming from a traffic stop last month on Route 8.

Police said the defendants were passengers in a car that was stopped about 2:40 a.m. July 16 a short time after an officer spotted it pulling out of the parking lot of a business, well after closing hours.

Somple told police that she and the others in the car had stopped at the lot to change drivers. She admitted that she had been driving but had become too tired.

While taking with the occupants, the officer noticed a backpack on the rear passenger floor between where Somple and Stuteville were seated. A number of sandwich baggies were “spilling out” of the pack, court documents said.

Later, a Middlesex Township police officer called to assist shined a flashlight into the car and spotted a bag of suspected marijuana in the back seat area. Somple and Stuteville denied owning it.

The passengers also denied owning two bags of pills, identified later as amphetamine and Adderall, that police found in the map pouch behind the driver’s seat and in the back pack, documents said.

Somple and Stuteville are each charged with possession of a controlled substance and marijuana.
