Probation extended for sex offender

Jack L. Nulph

A Chicora man, previously serving a probationary sentence after pleading no contest to allegations that he molested an 8-year-old girl, saw his probation extended another 12 months in Butler County Court on Friday.

Jack L. Nulph, 61, admitted before county Judge William Shaffer to the allegation that he failed to complete counseling and treatment as part of his probation sentence.

In an agreement with prosecutors, the probation was extended for another year to allow him to complete the treatment, and once completed, the case would be closed.

Nulph, a retired police officer, previously pleaded no contest to indecent assault and was sentenced to four to eight months in prison followed by 16 months of probation. He was released with time served at the time of the plea.

He maintained his innocence at the time of the plea, stating that, “I served the community for 17 years, and I've never done anything wrong ... not so much as a parking ticket,”

At the plea, Nulph's attorney Patrick Casey told the judge the only reason his client entered the plea was because he has health concerns and didn't want to risk the extra stresses of a trial. With a no-contest plea, a defendant does not acknowledge guilt. It simply implies he is choosing not to fight the allegations.

Still, it is weighed as a guilty plea for the purpose of sentencing.

According to police, Nulph allegedly fondled the child at a home in Saxonburg between September 2012 and May 2014.
