Metcalfe accuses fellow legislator of name-calling

State Rep. Daryl Metcalfe speaks at a town hall event.

There is more bad blood between state Rep. Daryl Metcalfe, R-12th, and a Philadelphia legislator whom Metcalfe accused of berating him during a committee meeting and calling him a bigot later, during a visit to his office.

Metcalfe, who on Wednesday released a brief recording of the encounter, said in an accompanying video statement that state Rep. Brian Sims, a Democrat, became “unhinged” during a committee meeting on legislation involving sanctuary cities.

Metcalfe says a “red-faced” Sims approached him after the hearing and threw papers at him, and later passed him on the House floor, calling him an “ignorant, racist bigot.”

Metcalfe made the allegations on a minute-long video spot called The Metcalfe Minute, which is distributed via email. He called the incident, which he says occurred after a committee meeting in which he said supporting the bill should be easy for “any patriotic American,” an instance of “liberal intolerance by the radial left, who would rather support lawless, illegal aliens instead of protecting American citizens.”

Metcalfe's office did not respond to a request for an interview Thursday.

Sims, who is the General Assembly's first openly gay legislator, declined an interview request Thursday. In an emailed statement he said the confrontations with Metcalfe occurred because he felt the chairman was impugning him as well as other Democrats on the House State Government Committee.

“The Chairman can belittle me for being gay, treat Democrats, especially those from Philadelphia, with contempt and disrespect, and advocate for right-wing legislation that is antithetical to the values of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania — but I would not allow him to question my patriotism or the patriotism of my Democratic colleagues, who include active and retired members of the military,” Sims' statement reads, in part.

The confrontations are the latest episode in what has been a long-running adversarial relationship between the two legislators.
