Staff members save inmate's life

Prison staff members who saved an inmate during a suicide attempt are, from left, Justin Baptiste, Justin Kriley, Anita Vicari, Alyssa Kummer and Darren Knox.

A Butler County Prison inmate was saved after attempting suicide Friday.

Butler County Warden Joe DeMore said the inmate, whose name could not be released due to medical privacy regulations, used a bed sheet in the attempt.

“The inmate hung himself in the medical housing area,” DeMore said.

He credited prison staff members for saving the inmate.

DeMore said Corrections Officer Anita Vicari discovered the inmate with the noose around his neck around 2 p.m.

“Doing her security round, Vicari came upon the inmate,” he said.

Vicari and Corrections Officer Alyssa Kummer held the inmate's legs in the air to alleviate the pressure on his neck.

Corrections Officer Darren Knox and Treatment Supervisor Justin Baptiste relieved Vicari and Kummer while officers Justin Kriley and Ryan Crede removed the noose.

“He was never completely unconscious,” DeMore said about the inmate.

He said the prisoner was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released that day. The inmate then returned to jail.

DeMore lauded his staff's efforts.

“They did a phenomenal job,” he said. “They saved a life.”

DeMore said the inmate was under medical observation, receiving 15-minute checks, when the incident occurred.

He said having an electronic documentation system, which was implemented earlier this year, helps ensure rounds and inmate status updates are logged.

Sheriff Mike Slupe, chairman of the county prison board, also praised the staff involved in the save Friday.

“They are all to be commended,” Slupe said. “It goes to show you teamwork and diligence leads to successful resolutions.”
