Suspect in bank robberies caught

Alexander J. Welter

FRANKLIN TWP — The man accused of robbing the First National Bank on Route 422 and the bank inside the Giant Eagle store at Clearview Mall in Center Township was caught Wednesday.

Alexander J. Welter, 22, of Oakland Township is in the Butler County Prison on $250,000 bail.

According to authorities, Welter was arrested in Butler Wednesday night.

During the First National Bank robbery, Welter reportedly did not show a weapon to bank employees, but handed over a letter demanding money.

In the Giant Eagle robbery last Sunday, Welter allegedly walked into the Citizens Bank branch wearing a motorcycle helmet and using a handwritten note to demand $3,000. Police did not disclose the specific amount he took.

He is facing felony robbery, theft and receiving stolen property charges and misdemeanor terroristic threats and simple assault charges from the Center Township robbery. Charges had yet to be filed this afternoon in the second incident.
