Slippery Rock's McCall finds her softball home

SLIPPERY ROCK — It was just too much for Macy McCall to juggle.

So the Slippery Rock High junior made a tough and unusual decision.

She decided to give up high school softball this spring.

“It felt like I was being pulled in two different directions. It was just a lot with doing track, too,” McCall said. “(Slippery Rock track and field coach Tom Meling) would stay after practice with me to practice the hurdles.

“I don't even think it was my body, it was mentally,” McCall added.

Also an accomplished basketball player and track athlete, McCall had all but given up on playing softball in college.

McCall still played softball for the Ohio Outlaws traveling team this summer.

That's where she got noticed by the one school that was recruiting her for softball, Wright State University of Dayton, Ohio.

McCall committed to play for the Division I Raiders June 26.

Wright State was the only school to offer McCall, who will enter her senior year at Slippery Rock in the fall.

“It's really crazy to me,” McCall said. “It's hard to believe.”

McCall's fundamentals and her ability to play several positions, including third base and the outfield, is what initially drew the attention of college coaches.

But only Wright State and St. Francis University were still showing an interest.

McCall visited Wright State and said she knew it was a good fit for her.

“It just felt right,” she said.

McCall plans on majoring in exercise science.

McCall ran the 100- and 300-meter hurdles and also did the triple jump for the Rockets in the spring.

She's a guard on the Slippery Rock girls basketball team. Defense is her speciality, although she can certainly score when needed. She averaged 6.8 points per game to go with 3.9 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 2.4 steals per contest.

McCall is already excited about the basketball team's prospects after losing in the District 10 title game last season.

“I'm still going to stick with basketball and I'm really excited about that,” McCall said.

She is still unsure if she will return to the Slippery Rock softball team next spring.

This past spring, she worked with a hitting coach when she wasn't competing on the track to stay sharp for this summer season.

“I benefitted a lot from that, I think,” she said. “I was able to focus on the improvements I needed to make and my fundamentals.”

McCall picked up softball when she was 10.

“I always enjoyed it,” she said.

She's played basketball and competed in track and field nearly as long.

“I really just wanted to open up my options,” McCall said. “I never really knew what sport I was going to do in college. Now I know.”
