Mother might be charged for unborn assault

EAST BUTLER — Criminal charges are being considered against a woman who apparently overdosed on heroin last week while more than seven months pregnant, prosecutors said.

The likely charge, aggravated assault of an unborn child, has never been filed in Butler County, according to District Attorney Richard Goldinger.

But any charges against 30-year-old Kasey R. Dischman could be added or amended, investigators said, depending on the fate of the baby girl — who was delivered by emergency caesarean section Saturday.

“The baby's in bad shape,” police Lt. Eric Hermick said Tuesday. “The baby's in severe condition.”

Dischman remains at a Pittsburgh hospital and authorities say they were advised that she could be released soon. But she won't be going free.

Hermick said there's a probation detainer already filed against her. Police also could have in hand an arrest warrant in the felony assault case against her then fetus.

“We have some medical opinion that the child's condition is due to (Dischman's) opioid abuse,” Goldinger said.
