Another DUI case filed

Police: Woman found asleep at wheel

A Clay Township woman tested at more than four times the legal blood-alcohol limit after she was found asleep at the wheel with her foot on the brake on a Butler road.

State police on Thursday charged 29-year-old Barbara Ann Ghering with drunken driving.

It was the second time in a week that troopers have charged Ghering with driving under the influence.

In their recent filing, police said they noticed a sport utility vehicle about 3 a.m. May 21 stopped on North Main Street near WISR Way.

A trooper found the sleeping defendant and put the vehicle in park. Police in charging documents noted the “strong odor” of alcohol coming from Ghering.

Police opted not to have her perform field sobriety tests, due to her intoxicated condition. She was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital for a blood test.

Toxicology results subsequently showed her blood-alcohol level was 0.343 percent, documents said. A level of 0.08 percent is considered intoxicated under state law.

Additionally, her blood tested positive for the anti-anxiety medication alprazolam.

She is charged with driving under the influence of a combination of alcohol and drugs, careless driving and improperly stopping a vehicle on the road.

Police on June 15 charged Ghering in connection with a suspected DUI crash about 9:20 p.m. June 2 in West Sunbury. She is accused of losing control of her SUV and crashing into a utility pole along Main Street.

She told police that the wreck happened when she swerved her SUV to avoid hitting a truck that stopped suddenly on the road.

A witness, however, contradicted that account, telling police he was driving behind Ghering for at least two miles and saw her vehicle cross into the opposing lane several times.

The SUV also was following “very closely” to two motorcycles when she abruptly activated her turn signal and drove into the utility pole, documents said.

Ghering claimed she had just left work and denied drinking any alcohol, documents said. But a preliminary breath test subsequently showed her blood-alcohol level was 0.182 percent.

She is charged in that case with DUI, giving false information to police, following too closely to another vehicle, disregarding traffic lanes, driving at an unsafe speed, careless driving and reckless driving.
