June 16 — Police charged two Slippery Rock University students with having suspected marijuana and other contraband in connection with an April traffic stop in Slippery Rock.

Rachael N. Lee, 19, and Alexis S. Walker, 19, both of Pittsburgh were in the vehicle that police stopped for speeding about 7:55 p.m. April 10 on Kiester Road. Police smelled the odor of raw marijuana coming from the car.

A search of the vehicle turned up two marijuana cigarettes, according to court documents. Walker also was found with marijuana in her bra.

Lee and Walker are both charged with possession of a small amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

June 15 — Russell D. Biondo, 50, of Evans City was charged with drugged driving stemming from a traffic incident last month in Oakland Township. Police said they came upon his car May 19 stopped in the middle of Thorn Run Road.

Troopers got to Biondo’s car and asked while he was stopped in the middle of the road. He replied that he was “chilling,” according to charging documents.

Police believed he was impaired and they noticed a “fresh puncture wound” on his right arm with a “pin-size amount of blood,” documents said. He allegedly admitted to using heroin earlier that evening.

Biondo was arrested and searched. Police said they found a plastic bag containing suspected crack cocaine. In the center console, they saw a syringe with suspected heroin in it.

He was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital for a blood test. Toxicology reports subsequently showed he had cocaine and morphine in his system.

In addition to driving under the influence of a controlled substance, Biondo is charged with possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia, and making an improper stop.

June 15 — Barbara Ann Ghering, 29, of Clay Township was charged with drunken driving in connection with a one-vehicle crash this month in West Sunbury.

Police said Ghering’s sport utility vehicle about 9:20 p.m. June 2 struck a utility pole along Main Street. She told police that the wreck happened when she swerved her SUV to avoid hitting a truck that stopped suddenly on the road.

But a witness contradicted that account, according to court documents. That witness told police that he was driving behind Ghering for at least two miles and saw her vehicle cross into the opposing lane several times.

The SUV also was following “very closely” to a pair of motorcycles when she abruptly activated her turn signal and drove into the utility pole, a police affidavit said.

Ghering claimed she had just left work and denied drinking any alcohol, documents said. But a preliminary breath test subsequently showed her blood-alcohol level was 0.182 percent. A level of 0.08 percent is considered intoxicated under state law.

Ghering is charged with DUI, giving false information to police, following too closely to another vehicle, disregarding traffic lanes, driving at an unsafe speed, careless driving and reckless driving.

June 15 — Police charged Tracy D. Dietrich, 46, of Muddy Creek Township with drunken driving stemming from a DUI checkpoint last month in Center Township.

Police said Dietrich’s car smelled of alcohol and she eventually was taken for a breath test, which showed her blood-alcohol level was 0.085 percent. She is charged with DUI.
